另一说是源自印欧语词根 *dhegh- ，后者含义为“燃烧”(fever也源自该词根)。

不管哪种说法，古英语dæg的含义是“太阳在地平线上方的时间段”。不过，到了盎格鲁-撒克逊时代晚期(约公元850年-1066年)，它已经扩展为现在24小时制的“天”。

可能为了避免误解，于是在1530年代又造了个单词daytime，用于表达“当太阳升起到落下之间的时段，或者一天中evening和night之外的时段”，也就是“白天、日间、白昼”。

词典一般将daytime标为不可数名词，如
