Within just one weekend after the announcement, 2,319 cinemas in China have responded positively and registered to participate in the event.
The film focuses on the internationally significant historical event of the sinking of the Lisbon Maru during World War II, offering a panoramic portrayal of the resilience of the Chinese people and the warmth of international humanitarian aid behind the incident. As one of the few recent documentary films to highlight international issues on the Eastern Front of World War II, the film offers a perspective through the eyes of ordinary people witnessing grand history. It allows the audience to experience the cruelty of war and the preciousness of peace through the individual fates portrayed.
Premiering on September 6th, 2024, the film achieved remarkable success, grossing 47.459 million yuan at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing domestic documentary of the year in mainland China. It also garnered a high rating of 9.3 on Douban, a famous Chinese film rating site. In 2025, the film was released in multiple cities across the United Kingdom, receiving widespread acclaim. Many British viewers were moved not only by the film's authentic portrayal of the suffering experienced by Allied prisoners of war but also by the bravery of Chinese fishermen who risked their lives to rescue others. The film also earned praise for Fang Li's dedication in preserving this piece of history over the course of eight years.

纪录电影《里斯本丸沉没》聚焦二战期间里斯本丸号沉船这一具有国际影响力的历史事件，全景式呈现了事件背后中国人民的抗争精神与国际人道主义救援的温暖瞬间。作为近年来少有的聚焦二战东方战场国际议题的纪录电影，影片以小人物见证大历史的视角，让观众透过个体命运感知战争的残酷与和平的珍贵。
2024年9月6日，影片正式公映，以4745.9万元的票房成为年度国产纪录片内地票房冠军，豆瓣评分更是高达9.3分。2025年，影片在英国多个城市陆续上映，所到之处均是好评如潮。无数英国观众在感动于电影真实记录下盟军战俘当年的遭遇之外，也感动于中国渔民冒着生命危险出海救人的善举，并对方励历经八年不懈抢救历史的态度致敬。
