Wilderness areas provide a home for wild animals and plants, and they have become scarce in China. Of the wilderness areas that still exist, one of the most famous is Hoh Xil on Qingzang Gaoyuan. It is host to a great diversity of animals which includes the Tibetan antelope as well as many different bird species and an abundance of vegetation. It is reputed to be the greatest remaining wilderness in China. We must do everything we can to preserve the greatness of this wilderness by keeping it wild.

Ngari: The Civilization of the Wilderness

Both the ancient Zhang Zhung and Guge kingdoms have been lost to history. Nevertheless, Ngari still retains its unique charm today. It is the best place for stargazing in China and boasts unique flora and fauna and very hospitable people.

Ngari is in the wilderness, yet it is both wild and civilized.

There is a land that exists in southwestern China. This land is a world of mountains, a kingdom of mountains. It is a place so inseparable from mountains that even its Chinese name—Hengduan—sounds like it holds a grudge against the mountains. It is Hengduan Shan.

Hengduan Shan covers an area of about 360,000 square kilometers, 98% of which are mountainous. Deep in this mountain area, there are countless well-recognized tourist destinations such as Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong, Ruoergai, Xamgyi’nyilha, Daocheng Yading, Dali and Lijiang.

If we learn the history of Jiuzhaigou’s formation, we will come to understand that to “cultivate” a landscape to a level matching Jiuzhaigou’s beauty, incredible ordeals and disasters must take place. For mother nature, the damage caused by an earthquake is insignificant because all injuries to the land can be healed and the destruction mended.

In recent years, a new group of peaks in Western Sichuan has become a major focus of attention—Siguniang Shan. With its picturesque scenery, it is known as the “Queen of Shushan (Mountains of Sichuan).” Among expert mountaineers and rock climbers, Siguniang Shan is even more famous than Qomolangma Feng. Mountaineers and rock climbers from the West often call it “the Alps of the East” or the “Yosemite of China.”
