Hong Kong police evacuated 6,000 people from a densely populated residential and commercial neighborhood late Friday night after construction workers unearthed an undetonated World War II bomb, authorities said.

The 1.5-meter-long, 450-kilogram explosive was discovered in Hong Kong's Quarry Bay. The bomb, thought to have been dropped by a US aircraft, is functional and highly dangerous, according to the assessment by the police's bomb disposal team.

爆炸品处理课（EOD）专家指出，该物品是二战时期遗留的美军标准空投炸弹，重约453公斤，内部装有约227公斤高性能TNT炸药。该炸弹外壳完好，尚未引爆，且带有前置引信和尾部引信，仍具备完整爆炸威力。香港警方表示，不会在现场对其进行引爆，将采取销毁处理。

The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit believes the bomb, found between 16 and 94 Pan Hoi Street, "is still in good condition," thus prompting "the emergency evacuation" of 18 residential and commercial buildings, police said.

The EOD bureau is planning to deactivate the bomb at 2 am, by dissecting it and set off the explosive. It is hoped that the operation will be completed in 12 hours and nearby roads would be reopened then.
