When it comes to SAT scores and ASU, one name stands out: Elwood, former president of Biochemistry Club. He scored a 1560 on the August SAT. At Monday’s assembly, he openly shared his study journey from Grade 9 to Grade 12, offering heartfelt advice to his younger peers. "When I first entered HPA, the first thing I realized is that GPA and tests like TOEFL or IELTS are fundamental. They are the basics you’ll need for every college application. Honestly, if you pay attention in class and keep up with homework, your GPA will be in a good place. For TOEFL or IELTS, everyone has different study methods, but the most important foundation is vocabulary. Later on, I learned about APs and the SAT. These can strengthen your college applications, but they are not absolutely necessary. My advice is to take them only if: first, your GPA is strong while doing honors-level courses; and second, your English is solid—like scoring above 100 in TOEFL. SAT reading is at least two or three times harder than TOEFL reading, so it really takes preparation. For me, even though I could get 30 on TOEFL reading, I still had to study for two months during summer to reach 1500 on the SAT."

他当飞盘队队长时,带领团队拿到成都高中飞盘俱乐部第三名;
主持过学校的戏剧节、新年音乐会,也当过戏剧节男主角;
还参加了HOSA(全美最具影响力的生物与健康医疗领域学生活动)……

But high school is not just about academics. Activities in and outside of school are equally important. For international students like us, grades are not everything—actually, grades are not everything in life. Joining activities helps you develop soft skills like teamwork and leadership, and also helps you discover your interests. At school, there are so many opportunities. I joined sports and clubs—like being captain of the frisbee team, where we ranked third among all high school frisbee clubs in Chengdu last year. This experience helped me make friends and build leadership skills. Beyond clubs, school events like drama festivals or the New Year concert are also great chances to practice communication and cooperation. I’ve hosted events, directed, and acted in performances, and all of these experiences shaped me.
Outside of school, there are also competitions worth trying, like HOSA, BPA, or NEC. These can help you explore your passions while having fun. If you don’t know where to start, ask your college counselor for advice on what opportunities are available. For me, I have joined HOSA before and every time I did it, I had a great fun. It feels like more of a vacation than an intense competition. In conclusion, from grades 9 to 12, what I’ve learned is that high school is a balance. Yes, keep your grades up, take the language tests, maybe do APs and the SAT—but also join activities in and out of school. Most importantly, do these things not just for your college applications, but because you truly enjoy them and want to grow as a person.

ASU:From “Going It Alone” to “Shining Together”

When people first hear about the Academic Society Union (ASU), they often wonder: “Is this some elite club set up by the school?” The truth is quite the opposite—it’s a platform entirely imagined and built by the students themselves.
Originally, HPA had several academic clubs: Biochemistry, Business, Psychology & Public Service, Gender Studies, and more. Over time, students realized there was potential for crossover: The Business Club’s community projects could tie in with other groups. The Biochemistry Club’s lab work could inspire more science lovers.
“Since our goals overlap, why not work together for greater impact?” And so, ASU was born. From submitting full-fledged development plans just to run for leadership positions, to independently designing events and coordinating roles, everything in ASU is student-led.
This self-driven model means grades are no longer the only thing students chase. Instead, achievements have become the natural outcome of passion and initiative.
他们牵头 “小熊书吧” 志愿者服务,对接校长作为社团顾问争取资源,通过设计周边产品、优化空间软装等方式促进服务升级和营业利润提升;
他们策划校内股票模拟大赛,拉来中信银行提供学术支持、把课堂上学的金融知识变成了 “实战”;
还和渣打银行合作金融实训课程,提前触摸职业领域的真实脉搏;
Business Club has quickly grown into one of HPA’s largest student groups: Led by Robert,They launched the Little Bear Book Café volunteer program, secured resources with the principal as their advisor, and boosted both service quality and profits through creative design and merchandising. They hosted an in-school stock simulation competition with academic support from CITIC Bank, putting classroom finance lessons into practice. They partnered with Standard Chartered to offer financial training workshops, giving students an early taste of real-world careers. They formed a BPA competition team—and walked away with a national third-place award.
Biochemistry Club, HPA’s oldest academic group, evolved from the HOSA club into a dual-track model of “ experiments + science communication.”
Student leaders became campus figures by joining HOSA’s executive board. They invited professionals from Sikai Labs to host workshops. Together, they captured awards at national and international competitions—not as a résumé booster, but as a genuine response to their love of biology.
Do X Psychology & Public Benefit Club turned psychology into a tool for warmth and change: Starting with the acclaimed Art of Listening project last year, they created safe spaces for people in difficult situations to share their stories. Their creative campaigns have challenged stereotypes about mental health, all while staying true to their motto: “Do the meaningful things.”
Re.vision Gender Studies Club, one of the newest groups, reflects critical thinking in action. Club president Tina questioned the messaging in a Guerlain “Little Black Dress” perfume ad: “Does a woman’s confidence really depend on validation from others?” The club built an open forum for dialogue, sparking small but real changes on campus, and making “inclusion” more than just a slogan.
As Ms. Freda from College Counseling put it: “Our students are moving beyond business and science into social research and public service. They’re making tangible contributions that improve our school community. This isn’t about checking boxes for college admissions—it’s about passion, commitment, and leadership. And for universities abroad, this kind of impact is just as valuable as competition results, if not more.”
