September 5, 2025 – A press conference for the 2025 World AgriFood Innovation (WAFI) Conference was held at the Beijing Municipal Press Conference Hall. Sun Qixin, President of China Agricultural University; Chen Lianwu, Member of the Rural Affairs Commission of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC and Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of agriculture and Rural Affairs; Peng Shi, Deputy District Mayor of Pinggu District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality; and Dr. Fan Shenggen, Board Member of the CGIAR System Board, attended the press conference. The event was hosted by Ye Chang, Director of the Foreign Press Office of the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC.

During the conference, President Sun Qixin delivered the keynote address, outlining the background and key details of the WAFI2025 Conference. In alignment with the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and its subsequent plenary sessions, as well as President Xi Jinping’s important directives on agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, the WAFI Conference is scheduled to take place from October 12 to 14 at the Jinhai Lake International Convention Center in Pinggu District, and on October 15 at China Agricultural University. It is jointly organized by China Agricultural University, the Beijing Municipal Rural Agriculture Bureau, the People’s Government of Pinggu District, and the CGIAR. The event aims to foster global exchange and cooperation in agricultural technology, promote innovation in agricultural development, and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to current challenges in agriculture and food security.

Under the theme “Resilient Food Supply For Agrifood Systems Transformation,” the WAFI2025 will adopt a “1+7+1+N” framework. This includes an opening ceremony and high-level dialogues, seven thematic forums, one WAFI Expo, and over 40 parallel sessions and international exchange activities. The high-level dialogueswill focus on topics such as “AI and Future Agriculture,” “Nutrition-Oriented Agrifood Systems,” “Climate Change and Low-Carbon Transition,” and “Strengthening Multilateral Cooperation for Food Security.” The seventhematic forumsinclude the World Agricultural University Presidents’ Forum, World Agrifood Scientist Forum, Agrifood Industry Innovation and Investment Forum, Agrifood Business Forum, International Forum on Exchange and Cooperation, World Youth Forum, and Global Women in Agriculture & Innovation Summit.

The WAFI Expowill feature national pavilions, international zones, exhibition areas for globally renowned companies, academic and research institutions, as well as a special section highlighting Pinggu’s high-tech development initiatives. Side events will include national, provincial, corporate, and agricultural tech zone promotion sessions. Field exhibitions and site visits will also be organized based on local characteristic projects such as “One Town One Flower Garden” and the “Hundreds and Thousands Initiative.”Parallel sessionswill delve into international cooperation across fields such as agricultural technology, trade, investment, policy, and sustainable development, along with emerging topics like future foods, AI in agriculture, Smart breeding, and green farming.

The press conference highlighted four distinctive features of this year’s WAFI Conference:

Enhanced Global Participation: The event has invited 280 international guests from 94 countries and regions, including over 50 diplomats from 44 embassies in China, as well as representatives from more than 200 United Nations agencies, international organizations, and foreign companies. The Conference will bring together world-renowned scientists, educators, entrepreneurs, young leaders, women, and industry experts to discuss cutting-edge issues in agricultural technology and facilitate the implementation of high-quality projects and enterprises in Pinggu.

Diverse and Innovative Formats: The Conference will host numerous parallel sessions, international exchanges, side events, and closed-door meetings, with 41 co-organizers including the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China Association for Agricultural International Cooperation, CGIAR, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, FAO, World Food Programme, Asian Development Bank, Environmental Defense Fund, and World Resources Institute. By integrating with Pinggu’s local industries, the event aims to bridge theory with practice and foster innovative ideas in diverse scenarios.

Strengthened International Influence and Resource Gathering: WAFI is committed to becoming a world-class platform with academic depth, industrial relevance, and global reach. It will release significant reports and proposals offering “Chinese Solutions” for agricultural development, enhance China’s voice in global agrifood governance, attract international resources, and support the transformation of Beijing’s Agricultural Z Park into a “Global Agricultural Innovation Hub.” Through live broadcasts and multilingual media coverage, the Conference will set the trend for global agricultural innovation.

Commitment to Low-Carbon, Smart, and Human-Centered Principles: Guided by the “5R” principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot, Refuse), the Conference will feature special activities such as the WAFI Low-Carbon Run and WAFI Agrifood Fair, providing participants with a green and smart experience while promoting sustainable practices.
