It was the longest heat wave anyone could remember, and Sebastian couldn’t wait to cool off at the beach with his dad. Before heading out of town, they stopped at the library down the street and dropped off a few books.

Sebastian noticed a crew working on the library roof. “What are they doing?” he asked.

Dad watched them for a moment. “Fixing the roof. They scraped off the old shingles and installed a layer of tar paper. Now they’re nailing the new shingles over it.” He shook his head as they pulled out of their parking space and drove away. “Hot day for that. I worked on a roofing crew for a few years. Hardest job I ever had.”

It was then that an idea popped into Sebastian’s head: I bet they could use some water. But the idea vanished just as quickly as the scenery whizzing by his window, and his thoughts turned to swimming.

The waves were perfect for bodyboarding, and a sea breeze cooled the air. But all too soon they were headed home, back to the heat.

Sebastian was half listening to the radio when the DJ gave the weather report. “The record-breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon. With the humidity, temperatures will feel like 102,” she said. “If you have to be outside, remember to hydrate, avoid strenuous activity, and stay in the shade.”

Sebastian reminded himself that his dad had recently installed air conditioners in their bedrooms, so at least it would be comfortable at night.

When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working. “Do you think they have enough water?” Sebastian asked.

“I’m sure they brought plenty on a day like this,” Dad said. But he didn’t sound overly confident.

Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. His jersey stuck to his skin so stubbornly at the end of each day that he could barely pull it off.

It made him think again about taking some water to the roofers. He shared the idea with his brother, Marcos, who had just returned from the movies.

His brother shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys. They’ve probably gone home already anyway.”

Maybe Marcos was right. Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the library. But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling.

“I don’t see any coolers or jugs anywhere,” he told Dad. “I really think they need some water.”

A look of concern came over Dad’s face. He stood and picked up his car keys. “I think you’re right. It’s only going to get hotter.”

Sebastian stuffed a bag with water bottles and got into the car with his dad.

As they drove up to the library, a man in a green T-shirt nodded a greeting. Sebastian suddenly felt shy and wanted to turn back, but it was too late. “I, um, thought you all might be thirsty, so we brought you some water,” he said, thrusting out the bag. “You know, like a water boy on a football team,” he blurted.

A surprised smile came over the man’s face. After climbing down the ladder, he held the bag open for the others to see. “Hey, everyone. Come into the shade for a water break!” He turned to Sebastian. “I love that—our own water boy!”

“Yeah,” said another. “The aqua kid!”

“Thank you!” they all said as they passed around the bottles and opened them.

“We always pack water, but it was so hot today that we ran out,” one of the crew members said between gulps. “How did you guys know?”

Dad grinned. “It was all his idea,” he said, nodding at Sebastian.

Sebastian didn’t know how to respond. But the crew’s smiles said it all.

They finished their waters and put the empty bottles back into the bag.

“Well, we’d better wrap up here,” the man in the green T-shirt said. “Thank you again.”

The crew waved to Sebastian and his dad as they drove away.

“That was a nice thing you did today,” Dad said when they walked inside their house.

“It was no big deal,” said Sebastian.

“Maybe so, but sometimes it’s the little things people remember for a long time.”

It was a small thing, but still, it made Sebastian feel good. He tossed the empties into the recycling bin. Then he poured two big glasses of cold water, one for himself and one for his dad.
