The Manchu Paper-cutting of Changbai Mountains, a national intangible cultural heritage item of Jilin Province, originated in the Manchu habitats in the Changbai Mountains region. It carries rich heritage of Shamanistic culture and the aesthetics of an ethnic minority living on fishing and hunting. Its history can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), originally serving as a carrier of religious symbols used by the Manchu ancestors for sacrificial andpraying rituals. Later, it gradually evolved into a folk art form thatcombines both practical and decorative functions.
This genre of paper-cuttingprimarily utilizes red paper and is crafted in one continuous effort using traditional scissors, without the need for preliminary sketches. Technically, it emphasizes the “cutting techniques” and the “texture of the paper,” and features boldly but carefully cut lines. It skillfully employs symmetrical and repetitive compositions to showcase the Manchu people’s admiration for order and regularity. The themes encompass nature worship (such as ginseng and deer deities), Shamanistic totems (like the eagle, snake, and Momo figures), folk life (depicting ginseng gathering and hunting scenes), and auspicious patterns. Among these, the Momo figures are the most distinctive, embodying the Manchu people’s reverence for women through geometrically stylized human forms. The artworks are often used for window decoration, wedding ceremonies, and festival adornments, boasting distinctive practicalfunctions.
As a living carrier of the northeastern fishing and hunting culture, this craftsmanship has been perpetuated to this day through familial inheritance and master-apprentice teaching. Local authorities have established special protection mechanisms, promoting its living inheritance through initiatives such as introducing it into school curricula and developing cultural tourism products, thereby endowing this traditional paper-cutting art with new vitality in modern life.
As an intangible cultural heritage item with profound local cultural roots, the Manchu Paper-cutting of Changbai Mountains has achieved remarkable results in the development of the times. In terms of innovation, designers have integrated paper-cutting elements with modern creative ideasto develop a variety of cultural and creative products, thereby expanding its market reach. Local efforts to host paper-cutting exhibitions, cultural festivals, andotherevents have enhanced its visibility and influence.
It is crucial to attach importance to the protection and inheritance of ethnic minority cultures, support and foster intangible cultural heritage, and cultivate skilled inheritors to ensure that these cultural legacies are passed down perpetuallyfrom generation to generation.
