The brewing technique of Tsingtao Beer has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritageitem in China, with a history dating back to the founding of Tsingtao Brewery built by German and British businessmen in Qingdao—one of the earliest beer industrial legacies in China. Using spring waterfrom Mount Laoshan, high-quality barley, hop, and unique yeast as core ingredients,it combines traditional European craftsmanship with Chinese innovation to create the classic brewing method featuring “low-temperature fermentation and long-term storage.”
Its uniqueness lies in the inheritance of yeast strains. Since its establishment, Tsingtao Brewery has completely preserved and inherited the original yeast strains from 1903. Leveraging low-temperature sealed storage technology, the brewery ensures that the yeast stains remains active and stable for over a century, giving the beer distinctive mellow aroma and refreshing taste. During the brewing process, such procedures as malt saccharification, controlled fermentation, and maturation all rely on the brewers’ experience and precise control, forming a “four-step” brewing approach that combines both scientific accuracy and artistic craftsmanship.
As a living heritage of China’s beer industry, the brewing technique of Tsingtao Brewery serves as an important testimony to modern industrial civilization and has promoted the popularization of Chinese beer culture. By establishing a museum and opening production lines for visitors, Tsingtao Brewery has achieved the living inheritance of traditional techniques, combining historical, technological, and industrial economic value, and has become a distinctive symbol of cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.
Nowadays, Tsingtao Brewery promotes beer culture by hosting events such as beer festivals. Its museum showcases the history and craftsmanship of TsingtaoBeer to visitors, becoming an important window for cultural exchange. It also actively participates in public welfare activities, shaping a positive corporate image and making Tsingtao Brewery’s brewing technique an important symbol of the local cultureof Qingdao.
Inheriting Chinese culture is by no means simply reverting to the past or blindly excluding foreign influences; rather, it involves applying ancient knowledge to modern times, adapting foreign experience for Chinese usein a dialectical way, innovating by discarding the obsolete, and eliminating negative factorswhile preserving positive ones.
