At 9:33 PM on May 28th, residents of Maoming and surrounding areas witnessed a rare fireball meteor phenomenon. A glowing ball with a fiery tail streaked rapidly across the night sky, its brightness far exceeding that of lightning. The subsequent loud boom was so intense that it rattled doors and windows.

Meteorite hunter Bu Fan, along with his team, carefully analyzed and ruled out the possibility of the meteorite falling into the sea. They narrowed their search area to a region in Xiaoliang Town, Dianbai District, Maoming City. On June 1st, at 9 AM, Bu and his team of three began their search. They employed an innovative method combining drone reconnaissance and on-the-ground verification, conducting a systematic survey within a 2-kilometer radius along the projected trajectory.

"The meteorite was buried quite deep, and we had to dig from 1.5 meters to 3 meters to unearth it," Bu explained. They worked from 11 AM until the early hours of the following day, finally using machinery to hoist the giant meteorite out of the pit safely. The meteorite had a total mass of 423 kilograms, with the largest fragment weighing 251 kilograms, making it a rare large-sized witnessed meteorite in China.

Laboratory analysis revealed that the "Maoming Meteorite" is an ordinary chondrite of the L6 type, with a weathering grade of W0 (virtually unweathered) and a shock stage of S2 (very weakly shocked). On August 27th, the name "Maoming Meteorite" was officially approved by public voting, and its details have been officially recorded in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database.

“陨石猎人”：在茂名挖出423公斤陨石

日前，一篇题为“2025年5月28日茂名火流星降落的巨型陨石命名震撼公布：Maoming（茂名）陨石”的文章网上发布，瞬间引发网友关注。

5月28日21时33分，茂名及周边地区多位市民目睹了罕见的火流星奇观：带着尾焰的光团快速掠过夜空，亮度远超闪电，随后传来的巨响让部分居民感受到门窗震动。“陨石猎人”步凡说，经过反复推演，团队最终排除了坠海可能，将搜索范围缩小到茂名市电白区小良镇的一片区域。6月1日早9时，步凡团队三人抵达小良镇，正式展开搜寻。他们采用“无人机高空侦察+地面徒步确认”的创新模式，沿着计算出的陨石飞行轨迹，在半径2公里的范围内展开排查。

“陨石主体埋得很深，从1.5米挖到3米，才看到它的全貌。”步凡说，他们从当天上午11时挖到次日凌晨，最终用机械将这颗数百公斤重的陨石主体安全吊出坑底。称重显示，这颗陨石总重量达423公斤，其中最大单体重量251公斤，是国内罕见的大体积目击陨石。

陨石样品的化验结果显示，“茂名陨石”属于普通球粒陨石L6型，风化等级为W0（几乎无风化），冲击变质等级为S2（受冲击程度较低）。8月27日，“Maoming（茂名）陨石”的命名投票获得通过，相关信息被录入国际陨石学会数据库。
