It Was a Charity Summer Camp Founded by a Celebrity
I worked as a teaching assistant at the camp, initially joining simply to participate in a public welfare project. It wasn’t until after the camp began and I had deep conversations with the children that I was shocked to discover that these innocent, lively children all came from families of migrant workers suffering from pneumoconiosis. A kind-hearted foundation provided them with annual scholarships and a free summer camp.I had no idea that pneumoconiosis is caused by long-term inhalation of dust, and I was astonished to learn that so many people develop this irreversible occupational disease due to their work conditions. Once afflicted, the exorbitant medical costs push these already struggling families into even deeper hardship. This compassionate foundation turned out to be the Yuan Li Foundation, established by the celebrity Yuan Li herself.

During the summer camp, Ms. Yuan Li visited in person, and I learned that her foundation has dedicated the past ten years to one mission: supporting families affected by pneumoconiosis by offering them a ray of hope, particularly by helping their children access better growth opportunities. This experience completely transformed my understanding of public welfare and showed me the warmest glow of humanity.

A Group of Amazing Kids
During the early days of the camp in Changsha, the children appeared quite reserved. They were soft-spoken and often kept their heads down, remaining silent in unfamiliar settings and around new friends, which made interaction challenging. During group activities, I also noticed they kept a certain distance from one another—they neither knew how to show care nor had a strong sense of team spirit. But as time went by, through days and nights of shared experiences, these children gradually revealed a touching side of themselves. We ate, studied, and played together, and in these ordinary moments, I discovered their delicate and thoughtful nature. During breaks when snacks were handed out, there would always be children who noticed if a teacher or classmate hadn’t received theirs and would quietly bring the snack over. In group activities, once-shy children began taking the initiative to hold their peers' hands. During sharing sessions, more and mustered the courage to stand up and express their thoughts aloud.Watching them open up little by little—from being initially closed off to gradually learning to be grateful, to caring for others, and even forming genuine friendships—filled my heart with warmth again and again.
The children in Chongqing left a different kind of impression on me. One might have expected them to be shadowed by the hardships they faced at home, but the reality was quite the opposite—they were sunny, outgoing, and there was a resilient sparkle in their eyes. During the camp, they not only learned to play instruments like the ukulele, but what moved me even more was how they understood how to pass on warmth. They willingly helped the teachers serve meals and tidy up, and they never hesitated to lend a hand when their peers were in need. These small, seemingly simple gestures showed me the growth within their hearts: they were beginning to see things from others’ perspectives and learning the meaning of respect and giving. Perhaps it was precisely life’s challenges that taught them earlier than most—true strength isn’t just about being brave yourself. It’s about being willing to light a lamp for others when you are able to.

Not a Real Teacher, But Gifted with a Teacher's Heart
Though I wasn’t these children’s real teacher, witnessing their transformation from timid and quiet on the first day to confident and cheerful by the end of camp made me truly understand the weight of the word “teacher”—it lies not in a title, but in those moments of mutual growth. The courage they found to open their hearts, the sincerity in their eyes when they learned to care for others, even the warm tears they left on my shoulder when we said goodbye—all of it made me incredibly proud of this bond between us, one that felt like fate.
It’s almost humbling to admit—I thought I was the one teaching and helping them, but in the end, it was these children who taught me the most important lesson. Whenever daily troubles weigh me down, I think back to that afternoon when we sang "Snail" together.“I want to climb up step by step,”—in their clear, young voices was a purity of perseverance that many adults have forgotten.Though they carry burdens far too heavy for their age, they still share snacks with their friends with smiling faces, and whisper to me under the night sky:“Hi, will you come back next year?”
Love and companionship can melt barriers, and the seeds of kindness and gratitude, once planted in the heart, will one day take root and grow. Those scattered yet warm moments have now become starlight in my life. On a weary late night, remembering a child who once said, “When I grow up, I want to help more people like me,” makes everything feel worth it.May they always remember the courage and kindness they learned this summer. May the light that blossomed during the camp continue to shine along their life’s journey—just like the torch ignited by Ms. Yuan Li, which will one day be carried even farther in their hands.
And I—how lucky I am was there to witness the first glow of these little stars.
