On a training misison from Dyess AFB,Texas, the crew of this B-1B found the nose landing gear would not extend.
In consultation with Air Force and Rockwell specialists, the crew diverted to Edwards AFB where the smooth unpaved surface of Rogers Dry Lake promised a less damaging landing for During their flight,it is said the landing profile was flown in a B-1B simulator to provide predictive clues to the aircraft's behavior in this situation.
The crew, induding pilot Capt. Jeffrey K. Beene, earned the Mackay Trophy in 1989 for the "most meritorious flight of the year".
