On September 15, the hum of machinery gradually rose at the maintenance site of the 110kV Changhua Substation. Following the work supervisor’s announcement that “maintenance work officially begins”, maintenance personnel in work uniforms quickly launched operations such as equipment patrol inspection and component debugging in accordance with procedures—marking the full launch of the 2025 autumn centralized maintenance of substations by State Grid Hangzhou Power Supply Company.
Located in the southwest of Lin’an, Hangzhou, the 110kV Changhua Substation’s autumn maintenance lasted for 3 days. Focusing on the maintenance of the substation’s core equipment, the work covered key tasks including Class C maintenance of main transformers, 110kV bus voltage transformers, and bus disconnecting switch bays, as well as insulation improvement for the medium and low-voltage sides of main transformers and calibration of main transformer protection systems. These efforts comprehensively identified equipment hidden hazards, “boosted” the reliability of regional power supply, and built a “safety barrier” for the power grid to cope with subsequent peak electricity consumption periods.
After enduring the high-temperature “test” throughout the summer, power grid equipment has entered a critical period of “health adjustment”. This summer, Hangzhou’s total social electricity load hit a new high five times, reaching 24.112 million kilowatts. Long-term high-load operation has put forward higher requirements for equipment stability. Centralized maintenance of substations is usually carried out once every 5 to 6 years; this autumn maintenance is not only a “comprehensive physical examination” for equipment, but also a specific practice of the company’s three-year action to address root causes and tackle key issues. Through practical measures of “identifying hidden hazards, making up for shortcomings, and strengthening foundations”, the company accurately analyzes equipment operation data, identifies key maintenance parts and risk points, effectively improves the health level of power grid equipment, and fundamentally prevents and resolves power supply risks.
At the maintenance site, in addition to the busy technical backbones, a group of young figures stood out prominently. This maintenance adopted a “mentor-apprentice” model (lit. “veterans leading newcomers”), allowing young employees to participate in all links such as equipment disassembly, testing, and maintenance. This model not only ensures maintenance quality, but also accelerates the growth of young employees, reserving more professional talents for power grid operation and maintenance.
It is reported that this autumn, State Grid Hangzhou Power Supply Company plans to carry out more than 700 work tasks including infrastructure construction, relocation and reconstruction, and technical transformation and overhaul. This maintenance is only the “opening chapter” of the autumn inspection work. Next, guided by the three-year action to address root causes and tackle key issues, the company will continue to increase efforts in power grid operation and maintenance as well as upgrading and transformation. Through regular and refined equipment management, it will continuously improve the reliability of regional power supply and the ability to resist risks. (Text/Fu Yunxiao, Xing Jiali; Photos/Wu Chen)
