While I agree with your first sentence, it's not that easy. Most Chinese EV brands are on sale in Europe but hardly anyone buys them. Brand trust is a real thing.

Protectionism isn’t the only thing though..ironically for the likes of xiaomi, it’s actually insufficient production capacity..they only got 200-300k/yr production capacity this yr but they are expanding 3X to meet insatiable demand in China and other upcoming models..they probably need to 10X capacity to meet large overseas markets like the US

@durlacher1826 First of all, here in Europe, many Chinese brands aren't even selling their cars, at least the ones worth giving a try. And the ones who have tried their luck here, are only selling low tier models with very limited extras and accesories.
Apart from the fact that Europe wants to charge almost 40% taxes for any Chinese imported vehicle, which makes it almost impossible for them to find a market here.

@durlacher1826 I agree that it’s not that easy flooding the US market, it could take years to gain trust, except the price is reasonable, we all know it’s not going to happen because of the 100% tariffs. but the Europe part is not true, check Norway as one example,and the European EV can’t even compete with Chinese EV, that’s why some countries put tariffs 100% on it. Protectionism will weaken the competitiveness of the American auto industry, something we already experienced during the late Qing Dynasty. One of the benefits of a nation with a long history is the ability to draw lessons from past experiences, clearly Trump has no idea

@durlacher1826 You haven't done the slightest bit of research. China outsells EU/US/JP/KR combined in the EU for BEVs and PHEVs despite the new tariffs. That has been the case for at least 3 years.

@durlacher1826 Well of course, it takes time to build that. The other issue is servicing and parts, I think that is the bigger issue with Chinese EV brands. They have to work on that along with their expansion to really succeed globally.

@kenshin1368 Seems like you haven‘t done your research. BYD only sold 34.000 EVs in Europe in 2024, NIO 1.600 and XPeng 7.000 and MG 63.000. VW with all it‘s brands sold 380.000 EVs, BMW 170.000, Mercedes 120.000, Tesla 285.000. You couldn‘t be anymore wrong with your statement.

@eder.merino BYD, MG, XPENG, NIO have all their flagship models on sale here. Even in markets with no tariffs like UK or Norway they don‘t sell. The only exception is MG but even they don‘t get anywhere close to VW, Tesla or BMW EV sales in Europe.
