Love your life

However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and callit hardnames. It is not so bad as you suppose. It looks poorest when youare richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life, pooras it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hourss, evenin a poor-house.The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-houseas brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts before its dooras early in the spring.

I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have ascheering thoughts,as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to livethe most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough toreceive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supportedby the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselvesby dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.

Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourselfmuch to get new things, whether clothes or friends,Turn the old, return tothem.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

Words from the heart

Most people need to hear those "three little words" I love you. Once ina while, they hear them just in time.

I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward, where I workedas a volunteer. Her husband, Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferredfrom the gurney to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stagesof her fight against cancer, she was alert and cheerful. We got her settledin. I finished marking her name on all the hospital supplies she wouldbe using, then asked if she needed anything.

"Oh, yes," she said, "would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoythe soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on what's happening."Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movieswith a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustratingit was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her "a silly woman."

"Oh, I know Bill loves me," she said, "but he has never been one to sayhe loves me, or send cards to me." She sighed and looked out the windowat the trees in the courtyard. "I'd give anything if he'd say 'I love you,'but it's just not in his nature."

Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bedwhile she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he pacedup and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watchedtelevision and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteertime with Bill.

He talked about having worked as a carpenter and how he liked to go fishing. He and Connie had no children, but they'd been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the factthat his wife was dying.

One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of womenand how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get sentimental1 cardsand love letters.

"Do you tell Connie you love her?" I asked (knowing his answer), and helooked at me as if I was crazy.

"I don't have to," he said. "She knows I do!"

"I'm sure she knows," I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, carpenter's hands that were gripping the cup as if it were the only thinghe had to hang onto "but she needs to hear it, Bill. She needs to hearwhat she has meant to you all these years. Please think about it."

We walked back to Connie's room. Bill disappeared inside, and I left tovisit another patient. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holdingConnie's hand as she slept. The date was February 12.

Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I alreadyknew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M..

When Bill saw me, he allowed himself to come into my arms for a long time. His face was wet with tears and he was trembling. Finally, he leaned backagainst the wall and took a deep breath.

"I have to say something," he said. "I have to say how good I feel abouttelling her." He stopped to blow his nose. "I thought a lot about whatyou said, and this morning I told her how much I loved her... and lovedbeing married to her. You shoulda2 seen her smile!"

I went into the room to say my own goodbye to Connie. There, on the bedsidetable, was a large Valentine card from Bill. You know, the sentimentalkind that says, "To my wonderful wife... I love you."

The Color of Friendship

Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimedthat they were the best. The most important. The most useful. The favorite.

Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life andof hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animalswould die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in themajority."

Blue interrupted: "You only think about the earth, but consider the skyand the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up bythe clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity.Without my peace, you would all be nothing."

Yellow chuckled: "You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, andwarmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the starsare yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world startsto smile. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange started next to blow her trumpet: "I am the color of health andstrength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of humanlife. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but whenI fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no onegives another thought to any of you."

Red could stand it no longer he shouted out: "I am the ruler of all ofyou. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of bravery.I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Withoutme, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passionand of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."

Purple rose up to his full height: He was very tall and spoke with greatpomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishopshave always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. Peopledo not question me! They listen and obey."

Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but withjust as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. Youhardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I representthought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balanceand contrast, for prayer and inner peace."

And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority.Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startlingflash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pourdown relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to oneanother for comfort.

In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak: "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't youknow that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different?Join hands with one another and come to me."

Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. The raincontinued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch acrossthe sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live inpeace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever agood rain washes the world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us rememberto appreciate one another.

That's what friends do

Jack tossed the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit into a straight lineas he glared at me.

"What’s wrong?" I asked.

He jabbed a finger at the proposal. "Next time you want to change anything, ask me first," he said, turning on his heels and leaving me stewing inanger.

How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to do.

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my jobbefore me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me asidethe first day. "He’s personally responsible for two different secretariesleaving the firm," she whispered.

As the weeks went by, I grew to despise Jack. His actions made me questionmuch that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving yourenemies. Jack quickly slapped a verbal insult on any cheek turned his way.I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack inhis place, not love him.

One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know howI felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.

Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.

I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treatingme is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional,it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

Jack snickered nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyesbriefly. God help me, I prayed.

“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treatyou as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deservethat. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behindme.

Jack avoided me the rest of the week. Proposals, specs, and letters appearedon my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seenagain. I brought cookies to the office one day and left a batch on hisdesk. Another day I left a note. “Hope your day is going great,” it read.

Over the next few weeks, Jack reappeared. He was reserved, but there wereno other episodes. Coworkers cornered me in the break room. “Guess yougot to Jack,” they said. “You must have told him off good.”

I shook my head. “Jack and I are becoming friends,” I said in faith. Irefused to talk about him. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiledat him. After all, that’s what friends do.

One year after our "talk," I discovered I had breast cancer. I was thirty-two,the mother of three beautiful young children, and scared. The cancer hadmetastasized to my lymph nodes and the statistics were not great for long-termsurvival. After my surgery, friends and loved ones visited and tried tofind the right words. No one knew what to say, and many said the wrongthings. Others wept, and I tried to encourage them. I clung to hope myself.

One day, Jack stood awkwardly in the doorway of my small, darkened hospitalroom. I waved him in with a smile. He walked over to my bed and withouta word placed a bundle beside me. Inside the package lay several bulbs.

"Tulips," he said.

I grinned, not understanding.

He shuffled his feet, then cleared his throat. "If you plant them whenyou get home, they’ll come up next spring. I just wanted you to know thatI think you’ll be there to see them when they come up."

Tears clouded my eyes and I reached out my hand. "Thank you," I whispered.

Jack grasped my hand and gruffly replied, "You’re welcome. You can’t seeit now, but next spring you’ll see the colors I picked out for you. I thinkyou’ll like them." He turned and left without another word.

For ten years, I have watched those red-and-white striped tulips pushtheir way through the soil every spring. In fact, this September the doctorwill declare me cured. I’ve seen my children graduate from high schooland enter college.

In a moment when I prayed for just the right word, a man with very fewwords said all the right things.

After all, that’s what friends do.

The key of a car

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many monthshe had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowinghis father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his fatherhad purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his fathercalled him into his private study. His father told him how proud he wasto have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handedhis son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, withthe young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice tohis father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He thenstormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. Hehad a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father wasvery old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen himsince that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he receiveda telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of hispossessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take careof things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filledhis heart. He began to search through his father's important papers andsaw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears,he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a carkey dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer'sname, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tagwas the date of his graduation, and the words... "PAID IN FULL".

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as weexpected? Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; butremember that what you now have was once among the things you only hopedfor.

Sometimes we don't realize the good fortune we have or we could have becausewe expect "the packaging" to be different. What may appear as bad fortunemay in fact be the door that is just waiting to be opened.

Great Generals win campaigns, but it is theUnknown Soldier who wins thewar.

Famous educators plan new systems ofpedagogy, but it is the Unknown Teacherwhodelivers and guides the young.

He lives in obscurity and contends with hardship.

For him no trumpets blare,no chariots wait, no golden decorations aredecreed.

He knows the watch along the borders of darkness, and makes the attackon the trenches ofignorance and folly.

Patient in his duty, he strives to conquer the evil powers which are theenemies of youth.

He awakens sleeping spirits.

He quickens the indolent, encourages the eager, and steadies the unstable.

He communicates his own joy of learning, and shares with boys and girlsthe best treasures ofthe mind.

He lights many candles, which,in later years, will shine back and cheerhim.

This is his reward.

No one is more worthy to be enrolled in the democratic aristocracy,"Kingof himself andservant of mankind."

The Joy of Living

They just live out their joy and let it splash its sunlight and glow intoother lives as naturally asa bird sings.

And those who have and exhibit the joy of living are never those who havebeen without care, sorrow, failure, disappointment, and discouragement.

They are rather those who have suffered and conquered, and who are willingto bear theirshare of the vicissitudes of life uncomplainingly.

The joy of living never comes to the frivolous, the superficial, the selfish.

We can never get it by working for it directly.

It comes, like happiness, to those who are aiming at something higher.

It is a by—product of great, simple living.

The joy of living comes from what we put into living, not from what weseek to get from it.

Wherever you are,and whoever you may be, there isone thing in which youand I are just alike at thismoment, and in all the moments of our existence.

We are not at rest; We are on a journey.

Our life is a movement,a tendency, a steady, ceaseless progress towardsan unseen goal.

We are gaining something,or losing something, every day.

Even when our position and our character seem to remain precisely thesame, they arechanging, for the mere advance of time is a change.

It is not the same thing to have a bare field in January and in July.

The season makes the difference.

The limitations that are childlike in the child are childish in the man.

Everything that we do is a step in one direction or another.

Even the failure to do something is in itself a deed.

It sets us forward or backward.

The action of the negative pole of a magnetic needle is just as real asthe action of thepositive pole.

To decline is to accept the other alternative.

Are you nearer to your port today than you were yesterday?

Yes,you must be a little nearer to some port or other; for since yourship was launched uponthe sea of life,

you have never been still for a single moment—the sea is too deep;

you could not find an anchorage if you would; there can be no pause untilyou come into port.
