Beijing, Sept. 2 – Jeffrey Greene, Chairman of the Sino-American Aviation Heritage Foundation, shared stories of the Flying Tigers. Formed in 1941 by U.S. General Claire Chennault, the American Volunteer Group fought alongside the Chinese people against Japanese aggression.
Greene recalled that when the Flying Tigers first shot down Japanese planes, Chinese morale soared. In 1942, after the Doolittle Raid, 64 U.S. pilots were rescued by Chinese villagers despite brutal Japanese reprisals that killed 250,000 civilians. Still, for years, Chinese people risked their lives to save American pilots.
Greene noted that many in the U.S. remain unaware of this shared history. The Foundation, founded in 1998, continues to honour these sacrifices. (Photo by Zhang Guo / China Youth Daily)
