This hillside villa in Honolulu, Hawaii, was designed in 1969 by architect Sid Snyder and Vladimir Ossipoff of Ossipoff Snyder Architects. It is currently owned by electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The entire residence spans 2,996 square feet, featuring four bedrooms, multiple functional spaces, and a naturally connected courtyard, offering panoramic ocean views.
The residence is located on a hillside in the Waialae Iki community, floor-to-ceiling folding doors provide natural ventilation and circulation to cool the house. A covered lānai serves as a second, open-air living room. Multiple decorative wall cutouts throughout offer additional ventilation (and allow your music to flow from room to room). A private courtyard, modern kitchen and private office all make this a very livable, beautiful modern space.
Adhering to a rustic and minimalist style, the entire house employs a abundance of local building materials, seamlessly integrating organic interior decorations with the magnificent ocean views of Oahu Island, creating an ambiance of rural and natural tranquility. The house is filled with large floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a breathtaking view of the coastline from Maunalua Bay to the rest of Oahu Island.
The mottled walls, exposed wood, and tiles that directly meet the grass give the house a sense of naturally growing out of its surroundings.
Outdoor spaces were also ahead of their time in Sid Snyder's aesthetic and layout, emphasizing green naturalism and enabling the house to interact seamlessly with the outdoor scenery.
The plants and stones in the courtyard are all sourced from the local islands, while the planting of various vegetation and the construction of walls ensure a certain level of privacy.
Sid Snyder put a lot of thought into the design of the bedrooms, hoping that those residing here could always enjoy the breathtaking ocean views through the large windows.
The children's room is also designed with a strong island vibe, serving not only as a space for rest and reading but also as a versatile entertainment area.
Lastly, I hope everyone will heed Ryuichi Sakamoto's advice: "Live authentically and don't forget to look at the moon every day."
