Longhu Mountain, or Dragon and Tiger Mountain, is located in Shangqing Town, Guixi City, in Jiangxi Province. It’s not only one of China’s most iconic Danxia landscapes, but also considered the birthplace of Taoism. The legend has it that during the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoling—a Taoist master and founder of the Zhengyi sect—practiced alchemy here. It’s said that when his mystical elixirs were made, dragons and tigers appeared—giving the mountain its dramatic name.

龙虎山、龟峰包含了中国亚热带湿润区丹霞单体与群体的重要形态类型，形态类型的多样性造就了丹霞峰林地貌组合和象形丹霞景观的独特性。龙虎山、龟峰地区的丹霞单体地貌几乎涵盖了亚热带湿润区的所有种类。

Longhushan and Guifeng showcase a wide variety of Danxia landforms found in China’s humid subtropical regions. This diverse range of formations contributes to the unique combination of Danxia peak forests and the striking “pictographic” landscapes—rock formations that resemble shapes and figures. Together, these areas feature nearly every type of Danxia landform typical of subtropical climates.

因为是道家发源地之一，龙虎山从古时就被蒙上一层神秘色彩。在道教兴盛时，这里先后建有十大道宫，八十一座道观，五十座道院，十个道庵，其繁荣景象可见一斑。虽然因各种原因龙虎山的道教发展并不一帆风顺，却也改变不了龙虎山在人们心中的地位。

As one of the birthplaces of Taoism, Longhu Mountain has long been shrouded in mystery and spiritual significance. At the height of its influence, this area saw the construction of ten grand Taoist palaces, eighty-one temples, fifty monasteries, and ten smaller Taoist shrines—offering a glimpse into its former prosperity. Despite the ups and downs Taoism has faced at Longhu Mountain, its significance in people’s hearts has never faded.
