FOREWORD

This exhibition presents a visual dialogue and encounter between sensibility and rationality, highlighting the complementary relationship between natural science and artistic inspiration. As a bridge between nature and science, art manifests in diverse forms when supported by scholarly and intellectual frameworks.

The exhibition centers on two primary perspectives: one featuring ink paintings, watercolors, and prints that emphasize sensibility and emotional expression; the other focusing on botanical scientific illustrations grounded in scientific research.

Observation is the starting point of both art and science. When we observe nature, what exactly are we looking at? And how do we “see”? These seemingly simple questions reflect the long and intertwined history of art and science. Each plant-centered visual artwork not only reflects the changing relationship between humans and nature but also carries the evolution of observational approaches and perspectives, revealing multiple dimensions of human understanding of the natural world.

Though created with different objectives, artistic painting and scientific illustration share a common foundation: a deep respect for and attentive observation of nature. Artistic practice expresses the essence of nature through sensibility and subjective interpretation, while scientific illustration captures its structure and patterns through precise, methodical rendering. Art emphasizes atmosphere and feeling; scientific illustration seeks clarity and truth.

By placing these two perspectives in dialogue, the exhibition reveals how artistic creation and scientific study converge through detailed observation of nature—informing and enriching one another. It invites viewers to consider the diverse methods by which humans perceive, represent, and relate to the natural world.

Shenzhen is the first city in China to systematically propose the concept of a “Child-Friendly City.” Guided by its mission to “focus on Shenzhen and highlight the urban,” Shenzhen Art Museum is partnering with the Truth-Seeking Illustration Museum of Shenzhen, and inviting Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, to jointly present a summer exhibition specially designed for younger audiences. From curatorial choices to educational activities, the exhibition integrates artistic expression with the needs of children, exploring innovative approaches to public cultural service within the art museum context.

This exhibition seeks to provide an enlightening and inspiring cultural experience—one that not only broadens children’s ways of sensing nature, acquiring knowledge, and developing aesthetic appreciation, but also reshapes how society values childhood. It encourages children to move beyond passive observation and become active participants in artistic creation, allowing them to grow and find joy through engagement with the arts.
