The beginning of a new year is definitely one of the best times to discuss the traditional friendship between China and African countries. This time a young diplomat from Uganda offers a special and vivid perspective.
Agaba Ronald Bills is a Research Officer in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ugandan Parliament. He also works for the Ugandan Minister of Foreign Affairs as a Protocol Officer. "My main areas of interest include research on BRICS, how emerging powers like China are reshaping global diplomatic relations, and Africa's place in this," the young diplomat recently told China Youth Daily.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently concluded his annual New Year tour of Africa. Wang's recent trip took him to four African countries, namely Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, Chad and Nigeria. The visit continued the 35-year-long tradition of a Chinese Foreign Minister visiting Africa on the first overseas trip at the start of a year.
The Chinese Foreign Minister's first visit of the new year has triggered a warm response among young African diplomats, of which Agaba has become one. In his view, the visit, which was a complete success, is a symbol of the seriousness with which China values it's relationship with Africa.
This year will see the start of implementing the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Beijing Action Plan (2025-2027). Agaba is very optimistic about the role that the progress of this plan will play in promoting the development of China-Africa relationship. He noted that this plan will accelerate mutual cooperation between the two partners, and his wish is to see a clearer national and regional strategy of China with Africa.
"I expect the China-Africa relationship to be based on mutual respect and recognition of the unique development challenges and needs of each partner." Young people are always close. In the interview, Agaba extended a warm invitation to Chinese youth: "You will find true meaning in terms of professionalism in Africa because of the opportunities that exist, you will find happiness in life by building true bonds of brotherhood in your fellow African youth because we are happy and genuine people."
