Panel discussions with the Nordics to explore how gender equality fosters prosperous societies

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 4th United Nations World Conference on Women, on 28 May, the Embassies of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in Beijing, will host panel discussions on how to further advance gender equality and promote sustainable economic growth.

21/05-2025

The 4th World Conference on Women, convened in Beijing in 1995, marked a crucial moment in the global effort for gender equality. The resulting Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action acknowledged women’s vital role in the economy and remains a robust global policy framework for promoting gender equality.

Three decades after the conference, China and the five Nordic countries have made significant strides in female labour force participation, exceeding the global average. Evidence from these regions demonstrates that a rising female employment has played a vital role in driving economic growth and bolstering labour supply of nations. However, while progress has been made, there remains areas in need of further improvement to achieve complete equality in practice.

To address these issues and to honour the 30th anniversary of this landmark conference, panel discussions titled “Gender Equality – A Driver for Economic Growth” will be co-hosted by the five Nordic Embassies in Beijing (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) on 28 May.

The event will bring together a diverse panel of inspiring speakers across government, civil society, and business to exchange their perspectives. By addressing common challenges and respective strategies to accelerate gender equality, the event seeks to examine ways to make both public policies and corporate culture more friendly to women in the work force. By recognizing the transformative impact of gender equality across various sectors, these dynamic and practical discussions will highlight the potential of gender-inclusive policies and initiatives to not only empower women economically, but also benefit the society as a whole.

The Ambassadors/Chargée d’Affaires from the five Nordic Embassies in Beijing share their insights.

The Danish Ambassador to China Michael Starbæk Christensen:

“In Denmark, we believe that gender equality is not just fair – it is smart. When women are successful at work, businesses do better, innovation grows, and everyone reaps the awards, including men. Supporting gender equality means building a more balanced and productive society in which both women and men can reach their full potential. That’s why Denmark supports equality: because it drives progress.”

The Finnish Chargée d’Affaires to China Terhi Bunders:

“Investing in gender equality is a strategic economic decision. When more women participate in the workforce, economies become more innovative and productive. Equal pay and opportunities for women can significantly decrease poverty rates and increase wellbeing, benefiting entire communities. Being a female economist myself, I would like to add that females are under-represented in many economy and trade linked professions worldwide. This has wide implications: we need more women also in economic and trade policy-making. Studies have shown that decisions made and executed by diverse teams deliver 60% better results, which is why Finland is a firm believer in equality.”

The Icelandic Ambassador to China Thorir Ibsen:

"Gender equality is the foundation of prosperous and resilient societies. When women have equal opportunities to lead—whether in government, business, or civil society—nations benefit from more inclusive decision-making, stronger welfare systems, and sustainable economic growth. Iceland invests in gender equality, not only as a moral imperative, but as a proven strategy for building healthier, fairer, and more successful societies."

The Norwegian Ambassador to China Vebjørn Dysvik:

“Gender equality is not just a human right; it is the most valuable investment a country can make. No country can afford not to make use of all its human resources. Investing in women and girls is sound economics, essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting social justice. The rise in women’s workforce participation has been decisive for Norway’s development into a prosperous economy – and has contributed approximately 15-20% to our growth in GDP per capita over the past 40-50 years. Norway’s experiences exemplify that increasing women's participation in the workforce pays off – for the woman, for the family and for the country.”

The Swedish Ambassador to China Per Augustsson:

“For an economy to thrive, you can’t exclude half of the population from participation and decision-making. Empowerment of women and girls is necessary for sustainable growth, with the added benefit of creating a fairer society. Economic empowerment is the main theme of the Swedish presidency of the UN Women executive board, and a subject I’m particularly happy to address during this year of celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and the People’s Republic of China.”

Serving as a space for advocacy, knowledge-sharing and networking, the event “Gender Equality – A Driver for Economic Growth” will take place at the Icelandic Embassy in Beijing on May 28.
