On December 9th, the Information Office of the People's Government of Guangdong Province held a press conference on how customs support services are helping Macao better integrate into the national development framework. During the conference, it was shared that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to China. According to statistics from the Guangdong Sub-administration of GACC, from 1999 to 2023, Guangdong's total imports and exports with Macao amounted to 307.29 billion yuan, with an average annual growth of 5.9%. In the first 10 months of this year, Guangdong-Macao trade continued its positive trend, reaching 15.88 billion yuan in imports and exports, surpassing the total for the previous year, and showing a 25.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
Over the past 25 years, as Macao has become more involved in the development and construction of various sectors in the Chinese mainland, the scale of trade between Guangdong and Macao has continuously expanded, and its quality has steadily improved.
The trade method has become more optimized. General trade, which offers greater autonomy to enterprises and higher added value, has become the dominant form of trade. In the first 10 months of this year, Guangdong's general trade with Macao reached 12.64 billion yuan, Growing rapidly by 30.3%. This accounted for 79.6% of the total trade value between Guangdong and Macao, a significant increase of 52.3 percentage points compared to 1999.
The trade entities have become more dynamic. In the first 10 months of this year, various types of trade entities in Guangdong have all shown growth in their imports and exports with Macao. Among them, private enterprises saw imports and exports totaling 7.13 billion yuan, a significant increase of 59.5%, accounting for 44.9% of the total trade value between Guangdong and Macao. This represents a rise of 28.3 percentage points compared to 1999.
The range of imported and exported goods has become more diverse. In 1999, Guangdong's trade with Macao was primarily focused on textiles and Garment, with a high concentration of trade goods and a relatively simple structure. At that time, textiles and apparel accounted for 55.2% of Guangdong's exports to Macao, while imports of these goods made up as much as 83.2% of the total imports from Macao.
With the comprehensive and deepening economic and trade cooperation between Guangdong and Macao, the product structure of their trade has become more optimized and diverse. In terms of exports, electromechanical products have replaced textiles and garment as the main export items. In the first 10 months of this year, Guangdong's exports of electromechanical products to Macao totaled 3.62 billion yuan, with their share rising from 9.6% in 1999 to 23.2%. Exports of agricultural products amounted to 2.21 billion yuan, with their share increasing by 1.4 percentage points. On the other hand, exports of six major categories of labor-intensive products, including textiles, Garment, furniture, and luggage, totaled 1.29 billion yuan, accounting for just 8.3%. In terms of imports, Guangdong has been importing more consumer goods from Macao, especially local specialty pastries like almond cookies, egg yolk rolls, and pineapple tarts, which are very popular with mainland consumers. In the first 10 months of this year, imports of these specialty pastries reached a total of 67.3 tons, a year-on-year increase of 99.1%.
The flow of factors has been accelerating, and the channels for people's livelihoods have been expanding. About 80% of the fresh products in the Macao market are supplied by mainland China. Since Macao's return to China in 1999, over 4.7 million tons of fresh products have been supplied to Macao under customs supervision. Additionally, a"new homeland" convenience channel has been established in Hengqin to facilitate smoother customs clearance for Macao residents. This channel allows residents to bring in more than 300 types of plants and animals across seven major categories, covering various essential goods for daily life.
