"Today I’ve come to Lotus Pond Park in Beijing, a place where history, nature, and people’s daily life meet. It is said, 'First came Lotus Pond, then came Beijing City.' Here, I’d like to walk with you through the stories of water, lotus, and life. "

Lotus Pond Park is located at the junction of Fengtai, Haidian, and Xicheng districts in Beijing, covering 53.6 hectares, half of which is water. Its history can be traced back more than 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest water sources in Beijing. In ancient times, it was called “West Lake” and served as the core of the city’s water system. After careful study, Hou Renzhi, a renowned geographer and historian at Peking University, proposed the saying: “First came Lotus Pond, then came Beijing City.”

Lotus Pond began cultivating lotuses during the Jin Dynasty. In 1153, when Emperor Wanyan Liang moved the capital to Zhongdu, the Lotus River system became the lifeline for both the imperial gardens and grain transport. After the Yuan capital shifted northward to Dadu, Lotus Pond lost its status as the city’s water source and gradually turned into a suburban retreat for leisure.

Today, Lotus Pond is both a carrier of 3,000 years of memory and a product of modern ecological restoration. It demonstrates that water is not only a resource, but also a vessel of urban cultural memory. Walking into the park, one can truly feel the interplay between history and contemporary life."

The majestic building not far away is Beijing West Railway Station. It is one of the core hubs of Beijing’s railway network where countless journeys of departure and return begin and end.

When Beijing West Railway Station was first planned, the ancient Lotus Pond was at risk of being filled in to make way for the new project. Thanks to the tireless efforts of cultural heritage experts, the station’s layout was adjusted, and the pond was preserved. Today, standing amid the tranquil waters of Lotus Pond and looking up at the station’s grand façade, one can feel the dialogue between past and present — a living testament to Beijing’s ability to balance development with heritage.

A lotus exhibition holds every year here in the park. Over 300 lotus varieties, including “Sunshine Red” and “Lugou Moon,” bloom here each summer. With boats gliding on the pond, this place becomes a living gallery of fragrance and color.

Lotus Pond Park has become the capital’s renowned lotus-viewing spot. Each year, the Beijing Lotus Festival attracts citizens and tourists alike. The park grows more than 20,000 square meters of lotus, along with 10,000 potted plants. More than 300 varieties have been preserved and bred.

In midsummer, the pond turns into a sea of blossoms, with lotus fragrance drifting in the breeze. During the Lotus Festival, the park also hosts calligraphy and painting exhibitions as well as intangible cultural heritage workshops, connecting the beauty of nature with artistic inspiration. Lotus Pond Park demonstrates how an urban park can become a cultural garden, achieving a balance between ecology and culture, while also serving as a living space where citizens can relax, enjoy leisure, and experience the vitality of everyday life."

Water systems carry the memory of a city and nourish people’s lives. About two kilometers southeast of Lotus Pond, by the banks of the Lotus River, there is a nursing home named after the lotus.

"Hello everyone, I'm Laura. Today, I've come to a all-round nursing home in Xicheng District, Beijing to see how the elderly here live a happy life."

From the imperial city’s water source to today’s public oasis, the ancient Lotus Pond has witnessed three millennia of change. We see how Beijing’s water holds the depth of history while embracing the lives of its people. Water carries memory; care carries love.

The flow of the pond’s water and the laughter in the nursing home echo the same truth: a great city is one that remembers its past while warming the present.
