Southern lion dance is a branch of China's traditional lion dance, named "Xing Shi," or literally awakening lion, because of its majestic and striking presence. It is widely regarded as a quintessential embodiment of Chinese folk culture, combining martial arts, dance, and music. It has been added to the first representative list of State-level intangible cultural heritage items.
"Awakening Lion" is China's first contemporary dance drama themed on Guangdong Lion Dance, taking over five years from initial conception and planning, with the script refined across thirteen drafts.

The dance drama premiered in September 2018. To date, it has been staged over 300 times, including cultural exchange performances. From October 25th to 26th, it will appear at the Chongqing Grand Theater, bringing the show to audiences nationwide under the auspices of the 14th China Art Festival.
In terms of set dressing and audio-visual effects, "Awakening Lion" has optimized its musical orchestration and upgraded multimedia projection effects. The lion head design has also been refined from its prior 3D modeling into more detailed modeling.
This dance drama integrates "dance" and "martial arts," fusing the powerful vigor of the awakening lion with graceful, dynamic choreography. The work incorporates elements of the horse-riding step of Nanquan (southern-style boxing) and the distinctive Guangdong Lion Dance techniques, such as jumping, shifting, dodging, pouncing, twisting, and leaping, all seamlessly woven into the dance language, creating a dynamic tension between strength and beauty.

After watching the revitalized version of "Awakening Lion," many audience members said, "Several fight scenes felt cinematic," and "The stunning performance brought me to tears."
焕新版舞剧《醒·狮》震撼亮相
10月11日晚，由广州歌舞剧院创演的大型民族舞剧《醒·狮》在广东艺术剧院上演。
南狮是中华传统狮舞的一脉，因威武醒目而被称之为醒狮，是融武术、舞蹈、音乐等于一体的优秀民俗文化集大成者，被列入第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。
舞剧《醒·狮》是国内首部以“广东醒狮”为题材的当代舞剧，该剧从构思策划历时5年多，剧本经过十三稿的打磨调整。
舞剧《醒·狮》于2018年9月首演，截至目前已演出300余场（含文化交流演出活动）。10月25日至26日，该剧将亮相重庆大剧院，在第十四届中国艺术节的舞台上与全国观众见面。
舞美视听方面，《醒·狮》优化了音乐配器、升级了多媒体投影效果，醒狮的狮头形象也在之前三维制作基础上进行细化模型制作。
舞剧《醒·狮》将“舞”“武”相融，把刚劲有力的醒狮与柔美灵动的舞蹈相结合，南拳马步以及南派醒狮特有的腾、挪、闪、扑、回旋、飞跃等难度技巧被有机汇入舞蹈语言，充满力与美的张力。
观众在观看焕新版《醒·狮》后纷纷表示：“几场打斗舞段很有电影感”“震撼的表现，看得我热泪盈眶。”
