A puzzle has emerged for firms that have embraced AI, say Kate Niederhoffer and co-authors. Although workers are largely following mandates to embrace the technology, few companies are seeing it create any value.

The number of companies with fully AI-led processes nearly doubled last year, for example, and AI use at work has doubled since 2023. Yet a recent report from the MIT Media Lab found that 95% of organisations see no measurable return on their investment in the technology.

Why? One possible reason is that workers are using AI tools to “create low-effort, passable looking work that ends up creating more work for their co-workers”. They are creating, in short, what has become known as “AI slop” – or, in the context of the office, “workslop”.

原因何在？一种可能的解释是：员工正利用AI工具“生成看起来还过得去、实则偷工减料的成果，结果反而给同事带来更多工作量”。简而言之，他们正在制造所谓的“AI垃圾”——在职场语境中，就是“工作垃圾”。

The result is not to save on work, but to shift it from the creator to whoever receives it. “If this sounds familiar, you have been workslopped.”

A recent survey estimates that as much as 15% of the stuff done at work qualifies. It seems AI is not a miracle after all, but a new way to indulge in bad habits – procrastination, lazy thinking and sloppy work. Bosses need to think again.
