A confrontation broke out at the 21th Chengdu Worldline Anime Exhibition on Friday after a male cosplayer dressed as a character from the disputed Japanese series My Hero Academiasparked public outrage.
Videos circulating online showed attendees attempting to persuade the cosplayer to remove his wig, which symbolized the controversial character. When he refused, a man in white rushed from behind and forcibly snatched the wig, leading to pushing and chaos.
The controversy stems from the name of a character, "Shiga Maruta", which is seen as a deliberate reference to Japan's Unit 731, the notorious biological warfare force operating in Harbin, Northeast China's Heilongjiang province. The term "Maruta" was used to dehumanize victims of these experiments.
The incident occurred around 7 pm in a subway station outside the exhibition area, after the event had concluded, according to the event organizer. The cosplayer involved had not purchased a ticket to enter the actual exhibition.
Local authorities confirmed they are handling the case but have not disclosed further details regarding potential penalties.
