Golden October during the China's National Day holiday is the perfect time for a "Reading-Travel" experience in Lingnan. Tracing the footsteps of Mi Fu, a cultural icon in the Song Dynasty of more than 900 years ago, one walks into Yingde, where vermilion cliffs resemble ancient calligraphy scrolls, black tea embodies the elegance of the Song Dynasty, and peak forests look like ink-wash paintings, as if browsing through a living cultural history of Lingnan.

Downtown Yingde

The ink-wash landscape motifs created by Mi Fu when he served as the County Defender of Yingde in the Song Dynasty still read as a tangible cultural handscroll today. In the Tang Dynasty, Yingde was known as Yingzhou, famed for its "Ying stone" prized by connoisseurs for the four principal aesthetic criteria of thinness (shou), openness (tou), perforations (lou), and wrinkling (zhou). At Zhenyang Gorge, a cliff-carved inscription about hewing a passage through the rock seems to "converse" across centuries with Mi Fu's "Baozang" cliff-carved inscription; Nanshan Cliff Carvings unfold like a book, preserving the "Record of Nanyan Pavilion" of the Tang Dynasty and poems by Su Dongpo.

As China's hometown of black tea, Yingde's tea culture runs deep. Hongqi Tea ridges echo the refined spirit of On Sichuan Silk with tea liquor steeped in a millennium of tea culture, and today its fragrance wafts far and wide. The karst of the Yingxi Peak Forest carries the ink-wash mood of "Spring Mountains and Auspicious Pines"; Biluodong's legends find echoes in the very rock; the roasting craft described in "The Classic of Tea" remains visible; and the Yanshanzhai site bears the marks of early Lingnan cultures often associated with the Baiyue people.

Even now, you can perceive the artistic style of Mi Fu calligraphy in Yingde's fantastic stones, and savor the elegance of the Tang and Song Dynasties in a cup of Yingde black tea.
