At approximately 5:40 p.m. local time on April 2, a collaborative rescue operation led by China’s National Rescue Team and the China International Search and Rescue Team successfully extracted a male hotel employee trapped for over 120 hours beneath the rubble of Mandalay’s Golden Country Hotel. The survivor, reported with stable vital signs, was transferred to a local medical facility in Myanmar for further treatment. He marks the ninth survivor rescued by Chinese teams since operations began. The joint mission included personnel from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Rescue Team and Shenzhen Public Welfare Rescue Team.

Jimu News journalists at the scene reported applause erupting as rescuers carried the man from the ruins. Prior to transporting him, responders shielded his eyes with a protective mask and wrapped him in a thermal blanket to mitigate shock.

Mr. Xiong, a volunteer translator involved in the operation, recounted entering the collapsed structure to communicate with the trapped individual. “He pleaded for water, stating he’d gone nearly five days without hydration,” Xiong said, noting he continuously reassured the man to stay calm.

On-site rescue personnel informed Jimu News that at 9:30 a.m. on April 2, following directives from the command headquarters, three Chinese rescue teams arrived at the Golden Country Hotel rescue site.Immediately afterward, they deployed radar equipment on the road to scan the hotel area. The scan detected possible signs of life at a depth of 8 to 10 meters.

“At the time, we were positioned a considerable distance from the building, but we determined the signal had to be coming from that very structure (where the trapped individual was located),” the rescuer stated. “We then moved closer to conduct horizontal and vertical scans of the building which later pinpointed movement 4 meters underground, confirming someone was mobile but trapped. In that moment, we became even more certain that a survivor was present,” the rescuer explained, “after assessing structural risks, teams breached new access points for secondary verification. Eventually, rescue team members found their way in, knocking on walls and calling out to verbally locate his position.”

A volunteer involved in acoustic signaling revealed that the initial responses were faint – they barely heard him. Rescuers instructed the man – later identified as a 53-year-old Myanmar national – to knock on walls, enabling crews to triangulate his position.

The trapped man followed instructions to knock on the wall, allowing rescuers to locate and begin digging. The survivor told volunteers he was pinned between two beds and desperately needed water. “He shouted ‘I need water!’ which indicated he was still in good condition,” the volunteer added.

Rescuers fed a hydration tube through debris before handing the survivor an eye mask, instructing him to wear it and keep his eyes shut upon rescue. The man, whose hands were free, put on the mask himself.

Throughout the 2–3-hour extraction, responders cautioned against movement while affirming, “We’re bringing you out safely.”

Post-rescue, the man remained composed. “His resilience was evident. We administered water gradually via bottle once he surfaced,” a team member stated.
