On Wednesday 10 September, Mrs. Karin Debroey, head of the international department of the Belgian Confederation of Christian Trade Unions, spoke at an event organized by the EU delegation in Beijing. The event celebrated this year’s 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. Mrs. Debroey is a Belgian expert with international outreach on gender topics in the work environment. The Belgian Confederation of Christian Trade Unions counts 1.5 million members (which is a significant amount compared to Belgium’s modest population of 11.88 million people).
Titled “Beijing +30: Perspectives of Gender Equality and Women’s Rights from 30 Years Ago and Looking Ahead,” the event celebrated achievements, discussed current challenges, and explored future directions for advancing women’s rights globally. Mrs. Debroey was a keynote speaker and talked about women in the world of work. With a healthy dose of self-criticism on what can still be done better in Belgium and the EU, Mrs. Debroey explained how potential for women can be unlocked everywhere, including China. After all, “women hold up half the sky” she said, quoting Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China. The event also included a panel discussion between generations to think about where we stand today in terms of women’s rights and what the future holds for not only young girls but society as a whole, because gender affects us all and helps us move forward together as a team.
除正式活动外，Debroey女士在北京的三天行程中，通过多种场合会见了众多致力于本地性别议题的女性及人士。Debroey女士以好奇之心、无偏见之态，成功与多元的中国社会群体展开对话，就职场性别平等与多元包容议题交流见解与最佳实践。她迅速积累专业知识以提出精准问题，并乐于解答中方对话者关于欧洲性别议题的疑问——涵盖进展与障碍的双重维度。为首次访华之旅画上圆满句号，Debroey女士游览了举世闻名的紫禁城与长城，品尝了包括北京烤鸭在内的多道中式佳肴。她流露出未来再度造访中国的热切愿望。
离开北京后，Debroey女士飞抵越南河内，开启亚洲之行的第二站暨最后一站。比利时驻越南大使馆为她安排了类似行程，并给予热情接待。
Besides the event and in various settings, Mrs. Debroey met many women and people engaged locally in gender during her three-day stay in Beijing. With a curious mind and no prejudice, Mrs. Debroey managed to engage with various actors of Chinese society and exchange thoughts and best practices on gender and diversity in the work environment. She quickly built up knowledge to ask the right questions and she was happy to answer any questions her Chinese interlocutors had about gender in Europe both in terms of progress as well as obstacles. To top off her first trip to China, Mrs. Debroey visited the famous Forbidden City and Great Wall and tried various Chinese dishes including Peking duck. She seemed eager to return to China in the future.
After Beijing, Mrs. Debroey flew to Hanoi, Vietnam for the second and final part of her trip in Asia where she was welcomed by the Belgian embassy for a similar program.
