To mark the 35th anniversary of Fuori Salone at Milan Design Week, W.DESIGN founder and designer Wu Bin was once again invited by INTERNI (Italy) to participate in this globally renowned event. Curated by INTERNI’s Editor-in-Chief and Fuori Salone founder Gilda Bojardi, the exhibition brings together cutting-edge creativity and international perspectives.
Drifting Yǎo, the latest installation in the Travelogue on Mountains series, is located in the historic Cortile d’Onore at the University of Milan. Wu Bin uses Eastern aesthetics to explore the creation and transmission of Eastern spirit through his design language of Modern Orientalism, responding to the theme “Cre-Action.”
This installation continues Wu Bin's exploration of Eastern aesthetics in contemporary design, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and presenting a distinct Eastern perspective in the global design context.

"Drifting Yǎo" is an installation that explores time, space, and interaction. Located in Milan University’s Cortile d’Onore, Wu Bin blends abstract Eastern elements to create an artistic dialogue between cultures, symbolizing the future of creativity, spiritual expression, and Eastern aesthetics.
“Yǎo” (杳) combines “tree” and “sun,” evoking the image of sunlight fading into the forest—distant, elusive, yet ever-present. In Chinese, yǎorán suggests quiet remoteness and transcendence. The installation composed of wood and metal — explores the intersection of nature and constructed order. it is structured around two interwoven concepts: Movement (行) and Stillness (止) — creating a sensory dialogue between motion and pause.
Xíng reflects movement in the corridor area—a wooden triangular form where light refracts like sun through trees. Hidden sound elements invite interaction, turning time into a sensory flow.
Zhǐ offers stillness in the courtyard—a mirrored semicircle evoking the rising sun. Visitors pause, immersed in the subtle sounds drifting from the corridor.
In the corridor area, a minimalist wooden triangular structure becomes a corridor of time. Movement slices through space and measures time. Crafted from dark wood, it exudes a quiet, enigmatic presence.
Light enters with restraint through an overhead slit, refracting into shifting patterns. As time stretches or stills in fleeting overlaps, the space reflects the Eastern philosophy of change and constancy—ephemeral in form, enduring in spirit.
The corridor area is a journey in itself, with footsteps triggering hidden sounds that echo through the space. These sounds merge with light and nature, dissolving self-centered perception—making the wanderer a co-creator and others witnesses to nature’s voice. This reflects the Eastern ideal of self and surroundings as one.
The courtyard pauses time, shifting from action to stillness. The mirrored enclosure blurs boundaries like the rising sun, while the mix of warm wood and cool metal maintains a balance—serene yet subtly unsettled.
Visitors pause without a clear focal point, amplifying subtle perceptions—shifting light, slight temperature changes, and lingering sounds. Silence becomes the most powerful dynamic, like unpainted ink in a shanshui painting, holding vast space.
The viewer "listens" with the heart to the shifting sounds in the corridor area. "Separated yet not separated, defined yet undefined" embodies the concept of "negative space," where emptiness holds infinite possibilities and the unspoken speaks most profoundly.
The wood installation, weathered by nature and revived through design, echoes Empire Flooring’s commitment to the raw beauty of natural materials. Sound drifts with each step, transient and ethereal, gathering and dissolving within the breath of the wind, resonating with Moorgen’s meticulous exploration of sonic and technological dimensions. The boundaries of Drifting Yǎo are not solely defined by geometry or matter but are continuously reshaped and erased by the paths of its visitors, leaving only an ineffable sense of drifting—yǎo—a feeling that lingers, subtle and profound.
During Milan Design Week, Wu Bin, founder and designer of W.DESIGN, hosted the “W.DESIGN Appreciation Dinner” at Giacomo Arengario, a refined venue overlooking the Duomo and perched above the Museo del Novecento. The evening marked an elegant opening to a dialogue of creativity and design at the heart of Milan.
