On the afternoon of March 26, 2025, the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) hosted a roundtable on “Towards the Future of Regional Integration: Openness and Connectivity”. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shared insights on how open markets drive global trade and economic growth, benefiting Asia and the world. He highlighted four key areas for optimizing growth and cooperation.

Mr. Cormann first suggested that external demand and boosting services trade are Asia’s growth driver, contributing to global economic development. Asia’s trade outpaced the global average; improving its quality, along with liberalizing and modernizing Asia’s trade in services, will provide opportunities for people in Asia and the world. China’s further reforms in this regard could enhance its competitiveness.

In addition, Mr. Cormann called for greater transparency and stronger governance for Free Trade Zones to curb illicit trade and ensure a clean trade environment. FTZs are important because they streamline tariff processes and offer preferential tax measures to attract businesses and investment.

Mr. Cormannalso advocated strengthening SOE governance. A level playing field must be guaranteed. The OECD Principles of Corporate Governance offers a corporate governance regime for SOEs to increase productivity and the return on investment.

In Mr. Cormann’s view, the information sharing on climate change should be strengthened. Mr. Cormann stressed the importance of inclusive multilateral dialogues to together avoid, or minimize, the negative spillover effect that crosses boarder.
