【简介】Overview of the Appeal Proceedings According to the EPC helps in understanding the nature of the appeal proceedings before the Boards of Appeal. The previous editions of this book made an effort to explain in brief introductory terms how appeal proceedings work and how the Boards of Appeal function. This edition deals with the New Rules of Procedure adopted by the BoAC2 and approved by the Administrative Council which entered into force on 1 January 2020. About one in a hundred European patent cases end up before a Board of Appeal. The appeal reviews the decision of a first instance department of the European Patent Office. The appeal proceedings are substantially different from the first instance proceedings; they are a judicial review and not necessarily a continuation of the administrative first instance proceedings. This first aspect is even more pronounced since 1 January 2020, with the changes in the Rules of Procedure of the Boards of Appeal.

【简介】The Covid pandemic affected our minds as well as bodies, providing occasion to examine old literature in a new light. This book considers authors like Joyce, Kafka, and Chekhov, showing that present crises can deepen our appreciation of past achievements. It examines a wide range of diverse, often overlooked, fiction, arguing that the psychological and social insights of classic short stories and novels have only increased in relevance in the face of collective trauma. Comparative literature is thus linked to the study of illness and society. The book addresses the concerns of general readers whilst broadening our cultural vocabulary for analyzing contemporary challenges and dangers.

【简介】Part of a formidable publishing industry, cheap yet eye-catching graphic narratives consistently charmed early modern Japanese readers for around two hundred years. These booklets were called kusazōshi ("grass books").
Graphic Narratives from Early Modern Japan is the first English-language publication of its kind. It enables anyone new to kusazōshi to gain comprehensive knowledge of the field. For the specialist, our edited volume marks a turning point in scholarship, uncovering fresh research avenues.
While exploring the powerful effects of the visual-verbal imagination, this collection opens up bold new vistas on the act of reading and advances provocations around comics and manga.
Across the Green Sea: Histories from the Western Indian Ocean, 1440–1640

【简介】Beginning in the mid-fifteenth century, the regions bordering the western Indian Ocean – 'the green sea,' as it was known to Arabic speakers – underwent vast transformation. An era of commercial and cultural exchange blossomed between the Red Sea and Mecca, the Persian Gulf, East Africa, Kerala and western India.
In Across the Green Sea, Sanjay Subrahmanyam recounts the history of this ocean from a variety of shifting viewpoints. He sets the scene with the withdrawal of China's Ming Dynasty and explores how the western Indian Ocean was transformed by the growth and increasing prominence of the Ottoman Empire and the continued spread of Islam into East Africa. He examines how several cities, including Mecca and the vital Indian port of Surat, grew and changed during these centuries, when various powers interacted, until famines and other disturbances upended the region in the seventeenth century.

【简介】A celebration of the diverse world of American watercolors from the late nineteenth through the twentieth century, featuring works from the Harvard Art Museums’ collection.
Watercolor holds a special place in the history of American art. For generations of artists, the medium has provided a space for innovation and experimentation, allowing practitioners to let their imagination loose and to reflect on process and perception. Its rise to the status of fine art in the decades following the Civil War is well documented, yet its continued role as a testing ground and means of generating new ideas throughout the twentieth century has received comparatively less attention.
This volume considers continuity and change in the American watercolor tradition over a century of production through the lens of the Harvard Art Museums’ collection. Works by well-known watercolorists such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler are included, as well as surprising additions from Zelda Fitzgerald, Alexander Calder, Claes Oldenburg, and many others. In the spirit of the medium, the authors take a fluid and open
