Hey, everyone.

嗨,大家好。

Welcome back to my channel.

欢迎回到我的频道。

I'm Claire, your English teacher, and I'm a native speaker from the US, here to help you sound more natural and become more confident in English.

我是你们的英语老师克莱尔,也是一名来自美国的英语母语者,我的目标是帮大家让英语表达更自然,在使用英语时更自信。

In today's video, I'm answering a question I've seen a lot across my social media channels, and that's: How do I stop translating English from my native language in my head?

在今天这期视频里,我要解答一个在我的各个社交平台上频繁出现的问题:怎样才能停止在脑子里用母语翻译英语呢?

And I know this feeling.

我特别能理解这种感受。

I've lived in Germany for about six years now, and I can't think in English anymore when I'm speaking German with friends or coworkers.

我在德国生活了大约六年,现在跟朋友或同事说德语的时候,我已经没办法再用英语思考了。

It just breaks up the flow of my brain too much.

那样太打断我的思路了。

So I've trained myself to completely switch to the language I'm speaking, even to the point where when I try to speak Italian, which I'm currently studying, I'll often accidentally say a German word for something instead of my native language, the English word.

所以我训练自己,完全切换到当下所说的语言,甚至到了这种程度:我目前正在学意大利语,可开口说的时候,经常会下意识地蹦出德语词,而非我的母语——英语。

Because my brain thinks, "Okay, it's foreign language, " so it's used to thinking in German.

因为我的大脑会想:“好的,现在要说外语了”,而它已经习惯用德语思考了。

So I'm going to share with you some techniques that have helped me, and I think will help you to stop translating in your head.

所以今天我要和大家分享一些对我有用的方法,相信这些方法也能帮到大家,让你们摆脱脑内翻译。

This topic was also voted on for this week's video by my channel members.

Okay. Let's get started.

好了,我们开始吧。

English made easy with Claire.

克莱尔带你轻松学英语。

Before we begin, I want you to ask yourself why you want to improve your English.

在开始之前,我想让大家先问问自己:为什么要提高自己的英语水平?

What are your goals with learning English?

你们学英语的目标是什么?

This video is coming out at the beginning of 2025, which, for a lot of people, is a time of reflection and goal-setting, so I invite you to set a goal for yourself right now with your English learning.

这段视频发布于 2025 年初,对很多人来说,这是一个反思过去、制定目标的时期,所以我建议大家现在就为自己的英语学习定一个目标。

And keep that goal in mind as we go through a few techniques you can use to start thinking in English.

在我们介绍“如何开始用英语思考”的几个方法时,请牢记这个目标。

No more translating from your native language.

告别“用母语翻译英语”的习惯。

The first thing you need to do is stop looking up the definition of English words in your native language.

你要做的第一件事是停止用母语查询英语单词的释义。

Instead, you need to look up the definition in English.

相反,你应该直接查英文释义。

Why?

为什么?

Because this way, you're giving your brain a chance to stay in English instead of jumping back to your native language.

因为这样,你才能让大脑保持在“英语模式”,而不是总切换回母语模式。

For example, if you look up the word "excited, " you'll see something like, "Feeling very happy and enthusiastic." And that's already helping you by giving you two synonyms of this word in English, and that's gonna stick in your brain better than if you just read the equivalent word in your native language.

比如,如果你查“excited”这个词,会看到类似这样的英文释义:“感觉非常开心和热情。”这样做的好处是,你可以同时掌握两个同义词,相比只看母语的对应词,这种方式能让单词在你脑中印象更深。

Because your brain understands that immediately and will probably forget the English word for it.

因为如果只看母语,大脑瞬间就理解了,反而很容易忘记原来的英文单词。

Another tip I have is to label things around you in your home in English.

我的另一个建议是,用英语给家里的物品贴标签。

You can use sticky notes on your mirror, refrigerator, desk, or light switch.

你可以用便利贴贴在镜子、冰箱、书桌或电灯开关上。

Seeing these words regularly keeps English in your head without translating.

经常看到这些单词,能让你的大脑习惯英语环境,自然就减少了脑内翻译的过程。

You also have this visual connection to the word, and visualization in general is really helpful to, again, stop translating into your native language.

同时,你还能将单词与实物建立视觉联系,总的来说,这种视觉联想的方式,对于戒掉脑内翻译的习惯非常有帮助。

Also, when you're walking around your house, maybe when you're just on your own, describe what you are doing in English.

另外,当你在家走动时,哪怕只有自己一个人,也可以用英语描述一下你正在做什么。

So, for example, as you open the fridge to get some milk, you could say out loud, "I'm opening the fridge to grab some milk." It might feel silly at first, but it can be really helpful.

比如,你打开冰箱拿牛奶的时候,可以大声说出来:“我正在打开冰箱拿点牛奶。”一开始可能会觉得有点傻,但这个方法确实很有用。

Another great way to stop your brain from translating in your native language is to give it too much to do, that it can't even stop to think in your language.

另一个让你大脑停止母语翻译的好方法是给大脑多安排任务,让它没时间切换到母语思考。

What do I mean?

这是什么意思?

You can train your brain by listening to an audiobook and reading the words of that book on the page at the same time.

你可以这样训练你的大脑:一边听有声书,一边看着书上的文字。

As you see the words and listen to them at the same time, your brain doesn't have a chance to stop and try to comprehend each and every word you read.

当你同时看到和听到这些单词时,你的大脑就没机会停下来,去琢磨你读到的每一个词。

It also doesn't have time to translate.

它也没时间去翻译。

So this is actually a great way to train your brain to think and comprehend English quickly.

所以这其实是个训练大脑快速思考和理解英语的好方法。

Shadowing is a great technique to train your brain to think in English.

“跟读法”也是训练大脑用英语思考的好技巧。

I've talked about this before on my channel, but all you have to do is listen to a native speaker and then repeat what they say immediately after, copying their pronunciation and rhythm.

我以前在频道里讲过这个方法,你只需要听母语者说话,然后立刻重复他们说的内容,模仿他们的发音和节奏。

You can use podcasts, YouTube videos, or audiobooks for this.

你可以用播客、YouTube 视频或者有声书来练习。

It might feel redundant or kind of boring, but it does force you to stay in English, and it improves your overall fluency.

这个过程可能有点重复或无聊,但它确实能迫使你一直用英语思考,而且还能提高你的整体流利度。

Finally, possibly the best way to stop translating is to practice speaking as much as possible, even if you make mistakes.

最后,要戒掉脑内翻译,最好的方法可能就是尽可能多地开口说英语,哪怕说错了也没关系。

Having a conversation in English may still seem scary to a lot of you, and I still feel this way sometimes in German, especially with meeting someone new.

对很多人来说,用英语对话仍然很可怕,我现在说德语时,尤其是和陌生人初次见面时,也还会有这种感觉。

But when you're actually faced with communicating with someone, you don't have time to translate in your head.

但当你真的要和别人交流的时候,你根本没时间在脑子里翻译。

You might only understand 80% of what the other person is saying, but that's okay.

你可能只听懂了对方说的 80%,但这没关系。

Your brain is working in the moment to get the main point and taking what it can to understand, and coming up with responses in real time with the vocabulary you already have.

在这种情况下,你的大脑会立刻高速运转起来,一边抓住对方的要点,一边调动你已有的词汇量,实时组织语言来回应。

There's no time to look up a word.

这时根本没时间查单词。

You have to use what you got.

你只能用自己现有的知识储备。

If you're thinking, "That sounds great, but I don't have any opportunities to speak English with anyone, " you know I got you.

如果你在想:“听起来不错,但我没机会跟人说英语啊”,放心,我早就替你想好了。

In the description below, I've linked SpeakDuo, where you can meet and speak with English learners and native speakers alike for speaking practice, and it's completely free to try.

在视频下方的描述区,我放了 SpeakDuo 的链接,你可以在那里认识英语学习者和母语者,一起练习口语,而且完全可以免费试用。

You can also use my code below to get a discount on any of their plans.

你还可以用我提供的优惠码,购买任何套餐都能享受折扣。

I host a session there every week, so you can join live with me, and chances are, the goal you set at the beginning of this lesson had something to do with feeling more confident and fluent in English.

我每周都会在那里主持一次交流活动,大家可以来和我实时互动。而且我猜,你在这节课开头定下的目标,肯定和想要说一口更自信、更流利的英语有关吧。

And speaking practice with others in real time is how you're gonna do that.

而和别人实时进行口语对练,就是实现这一目标的方法。

And SpeakDuo is free to try, so why not?

而且 SpeakDuo 可以免费试用,不妨试试呢?

Oh, and here's a quick bonus tip.

哦对了,再给大家分享一个额外的小窍门。

Change the language settings on your phone and social media to English.

把手机和社交媒体的语言都设置成英语。

That way, English becomes part of your daily life, and you'll start to think in English automatically.

这样一来,英语就能融入你的日常生活,你也会自然而然地开始用英语思考了。

All right, thanks so much for watching, guys.
