现任香港浸会大学杰出理学教授、清华大学杰出访问教授,并担任印度喀拉拉邦数字大学创校校董会成员。于2020年6月从IBM Almaden研究中心退休,此前在IBM担任研究员长达38年,专注于数据库、区块链、人工智能及相关领域。其研究成果对众多IBM及非IBM产品、科研学术界及技术标准产生了深远影响——尤其是他发明的知名“ARIES数据库锁机制与恢复算法系列”(ARIES family of database locking and recovery algorithms),以及“Presumed Abort分布式提交协议”。曾获IBM Fellow(1997-2020)、ACM Fellow(2002年起-)及IEEE Fellow(2002年起-),还曾担任IBM印度首席科学家(2006-2009)。
除了获得ACM SIGMOD埃德加·科德创新奖(1996)、VLDB十年最佳论文奖(1999)及多项IBM大奖外,Mohan于2009年当选美国国家工程院院士和印度国家工程院院士。这位印度理工学院马德拉斯分校(IIT Madras)的杰出校友(1977年)在德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校获得博士学位(1981年),持有50项专利发明。近年来他专注于数据、云计算、区块链与人工智能技术(详见https://bit.ly/CMoTalks)。

报告题目:The Data Landscape: Trends and Directions
摘要:Five decades ago, the ACM SIGMOD and VLDB annual database (DB) conferences began. The initial set of relational DB products became available about four decades ago. Starting from around that time, I began working on various DB topics at the birthplace of the relational model and the SQL language, until my retirement 5 years ago as an IBM Fellow at IBM Research in Silicon Valley. As someone who has been, and who continues to be, active as an individual contributor in the DB area for nearly five decades, in this talk, I will give a broad overview of the evolution of the data landscape. I will discuss not only research topics but also the trends in the commercial and standards arenas. I will also present market share figures from data analysts. Some of the topics to be covered: cloud computing, intelligent computing, AI4DB and DB4AI, HTAP systems, LLMs, data analysts’ forecasts, workloads and benchmarks.
I intend for my observations to be of value to not only deeply technical people in the research and product spaces but also to management and administration type people who are responsible for data related topics. I will also discuss some China specific topics: Need for Chinese researchers to impact the world that goes beyond just publishing papers, Chinese companies and their DB products, what it will take for their influence to spread outside China.
