The "Chef Boy" video we posted on our WeChat Channel features a child we met during our visit to Leiyang, Hunan, in June last year. At that time, his father was already in the third stage of pneumoconiosis, yet he still looked energetic. The boy was a bit shy. When Teacher Yuan asked him about school, he said he ranked 20th out of 52 students in his class. When asked what he wanted to do in the future, he smiled bashfully and said, “A chef.” Asked whether he would be filial to his father in the future, he replied, “Yes.”

家里很黑，厨房很简陋。他的妈妈在他出生后不久就走掉了，尘肺病家庭的母亲，这种情况并不少见，现在家庭的主要生活来源是低保。他的爸爸说：我和儿子两个人460，一个人230每月。在我们走访的过程当中，这不算最低的，还有的地区160块钱一个人每月的低保。

The house was very dark, and the kitchen was simple and bare. His mother left not long after he was born — a situation common in families affected by pneumoconiosis. Now, their main source of income is government subsistence allowance. His father told us: “It’s 460 yuan for both of us, 230 per person per month.” During our visits, this wasn’t the lowest. In some places, it’s only 160 yuan per person each month.

转发即是公益

让人痛心的是，2025年除夕他的爸爸在湖南职防院去世了。那天我们刚好也在那里，只是并不知道这个消息。不知道上小学的厨师男孩是怎样面对的这一切，我们得知，现在厨师男孩和爷爷一起生活，家里现在只有小男孩一个有低保，现在是小学6年级，每天要乘校车上下学，早上5点多爷爷会送他。还有一个伯父，已分户不住在村里。

The most heartbreaking news is that on Chinese New Year's Eve in 2025, his father passed away at the Hunan Treatment Institute For Occupational Diseases. We happened to be there that day, but didn’t know about it at the time. We can’t imagine how this elementary school boy faced such a loss. We later learned that the boy now lives with his grandfather. He’s the only one in the household who receives the subsistence allowance. He’s in 6th grade and takes the school bus every day. His grandfather wakes up at 5 a.m. to take him to the bus stop. There’s also an uncle, but he has separated his household and doesn’t live in the village.

湖南耒阳一直经济欠发达，但也依旧走出了不少优秀的社会才俊。其中就有我们十分喜欢的政法大学罗翔老师，罗老师风趣幽默又充满正义感，同时在网上也拥有百万粉丝。希望罗老师也能关注到这些，为家乡，为这样的孩子，为尘肺病农民工发声。让我们的保障机制更加健全，小康社会更不能落下失去父母的孩子们。

Leiyang in Hunan has long been economically underdeveloped, but it has still produced many talented individuals. One of them is Professor Luo Xiang from China University of Political Science and Law, whom we deeply admire. He is witty, righteous, and has millions of followers online. We hope Professor Luo might see this and help bring more attention to children like this boy and to migrant workers suffering from pneumoconiosis. We hope this leads to a stronger social protection system — because no child who has lost their parents should be left behind in a well-off society.

今年我们七月在湖南的夏令营一定会有这个厨师男孩，我们希望用我们的一点点的暖意来温暖他，还有许多像他这样的孩子们。

This July, we will hold our summer camp in Hunan, and the chef boy will definitely be there. We hope the warmth we bring can comfort him — and the many other children like him.

个人捐赠小知识

根据《中华人民共和国个人所得税法》第六条规定：个人将其所得对教育、扶贫、济困等公益慈善事业进行捐赠，捐赠额未超过纳税人申报的应纳税所得额百分之三十的部分，可以从其应纳税所得额中扣除；国务院规定对公益慈善事业捐赠实行全额税前扣除的，从其规定。

企业捐赠小知识

根据《中华人民共和国企业所得税法实施条例》第九条：企业发生的公益性捐赠支出，在年度利润总额12％以内的部分，准予在计算应纳税所得额时扣除；超过年度利润总额12％的部分，准予结转以后三年内在计算应纳税所得额时扣除。
