The massive influx of Western culture in the form of films, TV programs and intellectual movements has long been the reality. In fact, this is a process that traditional China must go through as it moves towards the wider world, the future and modernization. And in this process, Chinese culture should and can make its mark, rather than be a passive participant that stands by to see Western culture spread far and wide. However, for much of the past serval decades, Chinese films and TV programs were about “China of the past”, a country that was underdeveloped, conservative, ignorant and even morbid. Even the Confucius Institute, which was built across the world over recent years, is “a response to the craze for the Chinese language”: its role is confined to language teaching and hasn’t expanded into cultural communication. As a result, in the face of the influx of Western culture on almost every front, we Chinese know how to parry, but not how to strike back.

In this context, the roots and core values of traditional culture are put aside, and consequently their role in fostering the younger generation and the character of the nation isn’t leveraged. Indeed, the jumble of values and abnormal behavior in modern China and especially among the youth have much to do with the discontinuity of traditional culture.

There is a growing recognition among far-seeing men and women that it is important to build on the power of traditional culture and access the strength of Western culture, and reshape our values system and cultural model as the two cultures learn from and interact with each other. The vogue for traditional culture in China over recent years is the very answer to this need. Unfortunately, behind the perceived excitement and impact caused by the vogue are concerns over its focus on form. Awash with hype and froth, it is divorced from reality and lacks what it takes to take root and leave a lasting impact.
