Chinese zither, or guqin, which is also called qin, peptachord, jade harp, banjo, and heptachord, is a seven-stringed plucked instrument with a history over 3,000 years. It belongs to silk string in Eight Notes (eight categories of musical instrument in ancient orchestra). It has a wide voice register, deep tone and a long lingering sound. It was originally called Qin (the pronunciation is the same as piano in Chinese) in ancient China and has been renamed as Guchin for distinguishing it from piano since 1920.

guqin inheritance requires balancing traditional essence withcontemporary innovation, warning against cultural dilution from commercialization. Throughfieldwork, audience interviews, and big data analysis, someresearch teams systematically explored pathways and innovative practices for preserving guqin art in modern urban settings, aiming to provide actionable models for the "people-object-life" approach toICH safeguarding.

As the strings resonate with tradition and modernity; the techniques bridge the past and the future. More attentionhas been paid to guqin amid rising cultural confidence. However,we still are faced challenges such as commercialization, loss of traditional essence, and limited audience reach.

Then What is our strategy for protecting Guqin? We stress that tradition is the foundation, with innovationas the direction. Some scholarsadvocate retaining classical aesthetics in teaching while selectively integrating modern elements to attract younger generations. What’s more, platforms like short videos can amplify guqin’s visibilityandpromote adaptation to modernity as essential for survival.
