Again the wild geese streak the vaulted sky,

Their lines of longing paint the cloud on high.

I came too late—here lotus blooms did dry.

The seed holds heart, so life shall never fade;

Man ages with years, yet dreams still stubborn stay

Through a thousand springs to burst and bloom gay.

Translator's Note:gay(archaic meaning:lush, lively and flourishing)

As if lovesick rhymes filled the clouds on high.

Too late! Lotus blooms have faded. I sigh.

Lotuses never die with their seeds strong;

Although life is brief, our dreams linger on.

A thousand springs see the flowers blow in song.

叶嘉莹（1924-2024），号迦陵。南开大学中华古典文化研究所所长，博士生导师，中央文史研究馆馆员。加拿大皇家学会院士，加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学终身教授等。有《迦陵诗词稿》等。

YEH Chiaying (1924-2024), Kalavinka Bird by literary name, a Ph D supervisor, the director of the Institute of Chinese Classical Culture at Nankai University. She is a member of the National Institute of Culture and History. The poet is also an academician of the Royal Society of Canada, a tenured professor at University of British Columbia, Canada, etc. Kalavinka Bird’s Poetry Manuscripts is one of her works.（买天春 译）
