A viral discussion erupted on Chinese social media Wednesday after users noticed that the back of their divorce certificates appeared to reveal traces of the traditional "double happiness" (囍) character — a symbol typically associated with weddings and celebrations.

据极目新闻，广东、江西两地婚姻登记部门工作人员回应，离婚证背面确实印有“囍”字，结婚证也是。这不是装饰，而是防伪标志。

Marriage registration offices in Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces confirmed that the character is indeed part of the certificate's design. However, they clarified that it serves as a security watermark, not a decorative element — the same feature used on marriage certificates.

据悉，在2004年之前使用的旧版离婚证上，其防伪标志为“双飞燕”图案。

对此，不少网友表示“没什么不妥”。一位网友说：“其实离婚也是为了体验更快乐的人生，何尝不是囍事呢？”

也有网友注意到，离婚证变成红色了。

While many netizens saw "nothing wrong" with the design, others pointed out another detail: the divorce certificate's cover is now red, just like the marriage certificate.

据中新网报道，根据2003年10月31日《民政部办公厅关于启用新式婚姻登记证等问题的通知》，自2004年1月1日起，我国离婚证封面由绿改红。从此，结婚证和离婚证的封面只有字样烫金、烫银的区别，这是为了消除社会对离婚的歧视和偏见。

The color change dates back to a 2003 notice from China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, which introduced red divorce certificates starting in 2004 to help reduce social stigma surrounding divorce.

根据通知，旧式婚姻登记证可继续使用至2004年6月30日，但自通知发出之日起不得再行印制旧证。全国各婚姻登记机关自2004年7月1日起不得再使用旧式婚姻登记证。

The notice allowed old certificates to be used until June 30, 2004, but required all registration offices to adopt the new version from July 1 onward.

2021年1月1日起，《中华人民共和国民法典》施行，新版结婚证、离婚证证件内容中登记申请依据均由《中华人民共和国婚姻法》改为《中华人民共和国民法典》。
