寧可食無肉，不可居無竹。無肉令人瘦，無竹令人俗。

人瘦尚可肥，士俗不可醫。旁人笑此言，似高還似癡。

若對此君仍大嚼，世間那有揚州鶴？

Better to eat without meat than to live without bamboo.

Without meat, one can become thin; without bamboo, one can become vulgar.

One can fat if thin, but there is no cure for vulgarity.

Others may laugh at this, as if it were high-minded or foolish.

If one still ges oneself in the face of this, how can there be a crane in Yangzhou?

《寧可食無肉，不可居無竹》寧可舍棄物質享受（肉），也不能沒有象征精神品格的竹子。竹在傳統文化中代表高潔、堅韌，這裏成為清雅生活的必需品。

《無肉令人瘦，無竹令人俗》沒有肉不過讓人身體消瘦，而沒有竹子（精神追求）會使人變得庸俗。「瘦」是外在形態的暫時缺失，「俗」則是內在品格的墮落。

《人瘦尚可肥，士俗不可醫》身體消瘦可以通過調養恢復，但若士人變得庸俗，則如同頑疾無法醫治。此句直指人格修養的核心——內在風骨一旦喪失，便無可挽回。

《旁人笑此言，似高還似癡》旁人嘲笑這種觀點「太高遠」或「太癡傻」，暗含對世俗價值觀的反諷，也體現蘇軾對自身選擇的坦然。

《若對此君仍大嚼，世間那有揚州鶴》「此君」指竹（化用晉王徽之「何可一日無此君」典故）；「揚州鶴」出自《殷蕓小說》，喻指「升官、發財、成仙」三者兼得的妄想。詩人反問：若面對竹子（象征清高）仍貪戀肉食（物質），世間哪有「魚與熊掌兼得」的美事？以此批判既想標榜風雅又不舍物欲的虛偽心態。

通過「竹」與「肉」的對立，歌頌了清雅高節的精神追求，批判了沈溺物欲的世俗風氣。蘇軾將居住環境的選擇升華為人格的堅守，展現了宋代文人「安貧樂道」「重道輕利」的價值觀，也暗含對當時官場功利之風的隱諷。語言通俗卻立意高遠，「不可居無竹」更成為後世文人精神生活的經典宣言。

Better to eat without meat than to live without bamboo. It is better to give up material enjoyment (meat) than lack bamboo, which symbolizes spiritual character. Bamboo represents integrity and tenacity in traditional culture, and here it becomes an essential part of a refined life.

Meat makes one thin, but without bamboo makes one vulgar. Being thin is a temporary lack of external form, while being vulgar is a degeneration of internal character.

One can fat again even if one is thin, but if a scholar becomes vulgar, it is like a chronic illness that cannot be cured. This sentence directly points to the core of personal cultivation once one loses one’s inner spirit, it is irretrievable.

Others laugh at this remark, as if it is too high-minded or foolish This contains a satire on secular values and also reflects Su Shi’s calm acceptance of his own choice.

If one still indulges in gluttony in front of gentleman, how can there be a crane in Yangzhou? "This gentleman" refers to bamboo (alluding to Jin Wang Hui Zhi's "How can one without this gentleman"). "Yangzhou Crane" comes from "Yin Yun's Novels", which symbolizes the vain desire for "promotion,, and immortality". The poet asks rhetorically: If one still craves for meat (material) in front of bamboo (symbolizing nobility), how there be a "fish and a bear's paw at the same time"? This criticizes the hypocritical mentality that wants to be both elegant and materialistic.

the opposition between "bamboo" and "meat", it eulogizes the pursuit of a refined and noble spirit and criticizes the worldly trend of indulging in material desires. Su Shi elevated the choice of living environment to the defense of personality, showing the values of "content with poverty and dedicated to the way" and "emphasizing way and devaluing profit" of the Song Dynasty literati, and also implied a satire on the utilitarian trend of the officialdom at that time.
