At the end of the Qin Dynasty, the Qin army launched a big attack on the Zhao state and surrounded the city of Julu tightly. The king of Zhao sent an urgent request to the Chu state for help. Chu state appointed Song Yi as the chief general and Xiang Yu as the deputy general, and ordered them to lead troops to rescue Zhao.

When the army reached Anyang, Song Yi stopped moving. He drank and enjoyed himself every day, leaving the Zhao state in great danger. Xiang Yu was very anxious. He tried many times to persuade Song Yi to advance, but Song Yi still refused to move. He even gave an order: "Anyone who dares to talk about advancing will be killed." Seeing the soldiers suffering from hunger and cold, and thinking about the hardships of the Zhao people, Xiang Yu could not bear it any longer. Early in the morning, he broke into Song Yi's tent, listed his crimes, and killed this cowardly chief general. When the king of Chu heard about this, he had to appoint Xiang Yu as the new chief general to command the whole army.

After taking over the army, Xiang Yu immediately led the Chu soldiers to Julu. When they crossed the Zhang River, he gave a shocking order: he let the soldiers break all the boats used to cross the river, smash all the pots and bowls for cooking, and burn all the tents. He only left dry food for three days.

The soldiers were surprised and confused, but Xiang Yu said firmly: "We have no choice now! Only by defeating the Qin army can we survive!" Without boats, they had no thought of retreating; without pots, they could only move forward to find a way to live. The Chu soldiers understood that they either won this battle or died.

When they arrived at the Julu battlefield, every Chu soldier was full of fighting spirit. They fought bravely, each soldier fighting as hard as ten enemies. They rushed towards the Qin army like tigers coming down from the mountains, and the sound of their battle cries shook the sky and earth. The Qin army did not expect the Chu soldiers to be so brave. They retreated step by step and were finally completely defeated by the Chu army.
