Myanmar held a ceremony to mark the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday, the state-owned daily The Mirror reported on Saturday.

During the event, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee and Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung delivered a speech, highlighting the theme "Fund Resilience, Not Disasters."

He said that the Mandalay earthquake, which occurred on March 28, 2025, caused losses of over 7,979 billion kyats (about 3.79 billion U.S. dollars), and emergency response and rehabilitation efforts were carried out under the guidance of the Head of State and the supervision of the National Disaster Management Committee.

He added that, since Myanmar ranks eighth among the ten most vulnerable countries according to the Global Risk Index, it is crucial to continue prioritizing and implementing disaster risk reduction activities.

He also emphasized that, to build disaster resilience, not only the government and private sector but also development and humanitarian organizations must work together and increase investment in disaster risk reduction initiatives.

A video message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and a short video on Myanmar's disaster management efforts were screened, and winners of commemorative competitions were awarded during the event, the report said.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is celebrated on Oct. 13 every year.
