According to data from the Department of Transport of Guangdong Province, daily vehicle traffic on the province's expressway network reached 10.01 million trips on September 30th, surpassing the 10-million mark for the first time. On October 1st, it rose again to 10.29 million, and on October 7th, it hit a record-high 10.54 million. The three surges beyond 10 million during the holiday are more than a simple accumulation of travel data, reflecting the strong integration of Guangdong's infrastructure capacity, public service efficiency, and the intrinsic dynamism of its regional economy.
A deeper analysis of the traffic data reveals the key driving force behind this surge—the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). On October 7th, the expressway traffic within the Chinese mainland cities in the GBA reached 8.02 million vehicle trips, accounting for over 70% of the total, marking a 10.83% year-on-year increase. Particularly remarkable were the performances of two "golden corridors": the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link saw 172,600 vehicle trips that day, up 27.03% year on year, while the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge recorded 24,200 trips, a striking 55.97% increase compared with last year.
Traffic means people, and the movement of people brings the flows of capital, information, and technology. The structural shifts in expressway traffic reveal Guangdong's strong appeal as a major destination for population inflows. On October 7th, the peak day for return journeys, inbound traffic reached about 687,200 vehicle trips, an impressive 95.87% year-on-year increase. By contrast, outbound traffic from Guangdong was around 191,900 trips, up 32.34% from a year earlier.
In response to the record-breaking traffic surges, three times exceeding 10 million vehicle trips within nine days, the Department of Transport of Guangdong Province and the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department coordinated closely to implement effective measures. To ease congestion on mainlines, on October 7th, authorities temporarily allowed small passenger vehicles to use emergency lanes (hard shoulder) on 16 congestion-prone expressway sections. Additionally, 27 expressway service areas adopted a two-way diversion system during the peak travel periods, guiding vehicles to the expressway service areas in the opposite direction to help relieve congestion.
