主讲人简介：
奚瓅， 北京大学基础数学学士、硕士，中国科学院信息安全博士。2015年加入九坤投资，历任量化研究员，基金经理，合伙人。在股票量化投资因子挖掘，信号组合，投资组合构建等方面有深入研究。

摘要：
This paper investigates how social network structure influences online medical crowdfunding performance. Using administrative data from a leading medical crowdfunding platform in China, we exploit detailed records of campaign information diffusion through social media to construct novel measures characterizing network structures. We find that campaigns achieving broader network penetration—characterized by lower concentration of views from the fundraiser's immediate connections—raise significantly more funds. This relationship operates through transcending homophily constraints, a mechanism we formalize in a theoretical model: deeper network layers contain viewers with higher socioeconomic status and greater financial capacity, despite reduced altruistic motivation due to social distance. Furthermore, exploiting quasi-experimental variations in exposure to China’s Compulsory Schooling Law, we demonstrate that network structure serves as a key mechanism through which fundraisers' education affects crowdfunding success. Our findings reveal how social capital structure systematically shapes inequality in online crowdfunding outcomes, providing broader insights into the distributional consequences of social networks in the digital economy.

Dr. Frank Schmid is Gen Re’s Chief Technology Officer, responsible for leading the IT Department and advancing the company’s AI strategy. He holds a doctorate in economics from Leuphana University of Lüneburg, where he also served as an extraordinary professor. His previous roles include positions at AIG, the National Council on Compensation Insurance, and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. He has taught finance and economics in Europe and Asia-Pacific and received the Hicks-Tinbergen Award from the European Economic Association in 2006, jointly with Gary Gorton of Yale University. He has published many papers at the intersection of AI and insurance.

The lecture will start with a high-level view of technology adoption in insurance before narrowing in on specifics—ultimately focusing on Gen AI adoption at Gen Re. The lecture will cover how re/insurers approach technology decisions, what re/insurers currently have in place, and where re/insurers are heading for.
