扬子鳄是恐龙时代的幸存者，是中国特有的“淡水鳄”，古代被称作鼍（tuó），是中国特有的一种小型鳄类，被列为国家一级重点保护野生动物。与恐龙同时代，有2亿年进化史。它既是古老的，又是现存数量稀少、世界上濒临灭绝的物种。因其生活在长江流域，故称“扬子鳄”。

The Yangtze alligator, a survivor from the age of dinosaurs, is a freshwater crocodile unique to China.
