In light of population ageing, declining fertility rates and increasing longevity it will be essential to keep workers longer in the labour markets. The main tool is to increase the statutory pension age, but what also matters is the effective retirement age, i.e. the age at which workers leave the labour market permanently. Better work conditions, more training and reskilling, fighting ageism, and improving workers' health are all essential elements to delay retirement.
