Clarivate, a global intellectual property and technology information analytics firm, recently released the "Top 100 Global Innovators 2025" report. A total of six Chinese mainland companies made the list, with Guangdong-based companies Tencent and Huawei both cracking the top ten, ranking 2nd and 9th respectively.
Since 2012, Clarivate has evaluated organizations based on patent quantity and quality, global footprint, citation impact, and related metrics. This year, it introduced a new macro-innovation framework of five driving forces, including sustainability, social well-being, efficient mobility, connectivity, and automation. The report shows that Japanese firms remain the largest contributors, with 33 companies selected. Chinese mainland and Chinese Taiwan together account for 19 companies, and South Korea for eight companies. Combined, these east Asian economies make up 60% of the list, underscoring the region's pivotal role in global innovation.
Chinese mainland companies on the list include Tencent (2nd), Huawei (9th), BOE (12th), Ant Group (77th), CATL (90th), and AAC Technologies (91st). Notably, Tencent has made rapid strides in recent years, with R&D investment reaching 7.07 billion yuan in 2024, over 85,000 global patent applications, and over 45,000 granted patents. Huawei's R&D investment in 2024 even soared to 179.7 billion yuan, representing about 20.8% of its annual revenue.
AI has become a key engine for company innovation. Since establishing its AI Lab in 2016, Tencent has accelerated its efforts, rolling out its self-developed large model "Hunyuan" in 2023 and an open-source model covering text, images, video, and 3D generation in 2024, which lowered barriers to entry and realized "AI for everyone." Zhu Keli, a standing director of the China Information Association, noted that "AI+" not only brings new growth drivers but also helps traditional industries transform and upgrade, injecting fresh momentum into the development of new quality productive forces.
