人皆负正气与负气,时刻相争。或有行不可理喻者,怀戾气、阴气、邪气,盖其身心为所制之应也,为负气所败矣。一历尽沧桑之祖父谓其孙曰:“人人之心,皆有二狼相斗。一者贪、嗔、妒、慢、私;一者善、友、 慷、诚、仁。”孙闻之,问曰:“祖父,孰狼胜耶?”答曰:“尔所饲者。”

Each of us possesses both positive and negative energy, which are constantly in conflict. Some people behave unreasonably, with hostility, gloom, or wickedness—this is likely a reaction to their body and mind being controlled. They have been defeated by negative energy. A grandfather, seasoned by life's experiences, once told his grandson, "Inside every person, there are two wolves constantly fighting. One is greedy, angry, jealous, arrogant, and selfish; the other is kind, friendly, generous, honest, and compassionate." After hearing this, the grandson asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The answer was, "The one you feed."

年轻朋友都希望自己的理想能尽早实现,除了个别幸运儿,极大多数人的理想可能终其一生都没有实现过,少数人则用了一代人的时间,就是十年二十年的时间才能实现它,那真的称得上是百折不挠。我印象中有人说当年一个年轻人在北京坐地铁,当地铁跑出地下、在地面上经过时,他突然想到这个寸土寸金的地方浪费了太可惜,如果在地铁上面盖上高楼多好。他就开始设计,到处联系人落实,据说最初听他讲解的人都以为他是疯子、神经病,但今天我们路过四惠东地铁时看到“空中花园”式的小区楼房,已经习以为常了,没人想到它居然起源于一个年轻人的梦想。

年少者皆望其理想早成。然除个别幸运儿外,多数人理想或终生未遂,少数者竟一代人之功,十年二十年方成,可谓百折不挠。吾尝闻一事:昔有一少年于京师乘地铁,车出地下,行于地上,彼忽觉此寸土寸金之地荒废可惜,若于铁道上盖高楼,岂不美哉?遂始设计,四处联络以求落实。闻初听其解者,皆以其为狂人、痴者。然今吾辈过四惠东地铁,见“空中花园”之宅邸,已习以为常,孰料其竟肇于一少年之梦邪?

Young friends all wish their ideals could be realized as early as possible. Aside from a few lucky individuals, the vast majority might never achieve their ideals in their lifetime. A minority persevere for a generation, ten or twenty years, to make it happen—that truly deserves to be called indomitable perseverance. I recall someone mentioning a young man in Beijing taking the subway. As the train emerged from underground and traveled above ground, he suddenly thought it was a waste for such precious land to be left unused. How great it would be to build towers above the subway lines. He began designing and contacting people to make it happen. It's said that initially, those who heard his explanations thought he was crazy, insane. But today, when we pass by the Sihui East subway station and see the "sky garden" style residential buildings, we take them for granted. No one thinks they originated from a young man's dream.

我引用过这样一句话,跟古希腊人相比,我们现代人跟残废差不多。这是说我们现代人都被专业分工肢解了。但事实上,现代人还是在努力追求全面发展。比如微博微信等等让千千万万人能够写作,短视频上千千万万人能够开口说话。据说韩少功先生说过一句话,一个男人应该坐下来能写、站起来能说,走出去能做事。我没找少功先生印证,但我相信是他说的,因为这句话里有湖湘学派的因子,儒家文化到了湖湘学派这里不仅经世致用,而且确实有一股豪杰劲头,有大丈夫精神。惭愧我做不到这样,我一坐下来就不想站起来,更不想走出去,我坐下来还想像年轻人一样躺平算了。

吾尝引一言:较之古希腊人,吾等今人几近残废。此言谓今人皆为专业分工所支解也。然实则,今人犹力求全面发展。譬微博微信等,让千万人能执笔;短视频者,让千万人能开口。闻韩少功先生尝云:夫男子者,当坐能文,起能言,出能事。吾未向少功先生求证,然信为其言,盖此语有湖湘学派之因子。儒家文化至湖湘,不仅经世致用,更兼一股豪杰气概,有大丈夫精神。愧吾未能如此,吾一坐则不欲起,更不欲出,坐时竟欲如少年辈躺平罢了。

I am ashamed that I cannot achieve this; once I sit down, I don't want to stand up, let alone go out. When I sit down, I even feel like lying flat, just like the young people.

有夫妻俩退休后开始享受休闲时光,妻子突然有一天问丈夫,你这么活一辈子对社会有什么贡献?丈夫半天没反应过来,我一个普通人要做什么贡献?很多年前,我的朋友毛喻原老师就有一句名言说,做一个普通人,是一项了不起的成就。原因就是我们身上还有很多非人的东西;把这些东西能清除掉,就已经非常非常不容易了,哪里还敢有做圣人、贤人、伟人、超人、智者、天才的奢望!所以说,你能做好一个普通人,无论对于社会还是对你自己,都是一个非常了不起的成就。

有夫妇退休始享闲适。妻忽一日问夫:尔如此活一世,于社会有何贡献?夫半晌未应,思曰:我一常人,需作何贡献耶?多年前,吾友毛喻原先生有名言:做一常人,乃为了不起之成就。缘由者,吾辈身上犹多非人之物;能除此诸物,已极为不易,安敢有做圣人、贤人、伟人、超人、智者、天才之奢望哉!故曰,若能做好一常人,无论于社会于己,皆为了不起之成就。

赳赳邀请我在知所做直播,讲大学之道。我们没商量怎么讲,直播前他说我们今天把第一句讲完就可以了。我第一次经历把一句话翻来覆去地琢磨,果然,两小时的聊天,真的是围绕一句话展开而已。大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善。我们由此理解禅宗的大德们参话头,由一个字一句话明心见性。就像禅宗有名的一句话说的,青青翠竹,皆是法身;郁郁黄花,无非般若。

赳赳邀吾于知所做直播,讲大学之道。未商如何讲。直播前彼言:今日讲完首句便可。吾初历反复研磨一句,果然,两时辰之谈,仅绕一句展开而已。“大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善。”吾等由此知禅宗大德参话头,藉一字一句明心见性。正如禅语有名言云:青青翠竹,尽是法身;郁郁黄花,无非般若。

Jiu Jiu invited me to do a live stream on Zhiso to discuss the "Great Learning." We didn't discuss how to proceed beforehand. Before the stream, he said we could just finish the first sentence today. It was my first time repeatedly pondering a single sentence in such depth. Indeed, the two-hour conversation really just revolved around one sentence: "The way of the great learning consists in manifesting illustrious virtue, in loving the people, and in resting in the highest good." From this, we understood how the great virtues in Zen Buddhism contemplate critical phrases (huatou), using a single word or sentence to illuminate the mind and see one's true nature. As the famous Zen saying goes: "The lush green bamboos are all embodiments of the Dharma body; the blooming yellow flowers are nothing but prajna wisdom."

早上起来看一个导演朋友有直播,点开进去,他在跳绳、健身,差点儿把我笑坏了,心里话,为做视频这么拼啊。笑笑后又佩服他的努力。事实上,这种把自己的生活方式直播,让世界看见自己,正是现代人生活的尝试,甚至就是一种方向。用哲学家们的话说,人存在本身就是意义,就是一种生产力,就有价值;在让世界看见的同时,人当然在调整,在进行自我完善,这就是天人相互参照,相互印证。

晨起见一导演友直播,点入观之,彼正跳绳、健身,几令吾失笑,心语:为视频何至于此耶?笑后复钦其努力。实则,此种直播己身生活方式,令世界见己,正乃今人生活之尝试,甚或可谓一方向。以哲人之言:人之存在本身即为意义,即为一种生产力,即有价值;于让世界见之同时,人自调整,进行自我完善,此乃天人相互参照,相互印证也。

This morning, I saw a director friend was live streaming. I clicked in, and he was jumping rope and working out. It almost made me laugh out loud. I thought to myself, "Is he pushing himself so hard just for a video?" After laughing, I admired his effort. In fact, this act of live streaming one's lifestyle, letting the world see oneself, is an experiment in modern living, even a direction of sorts. As philosophers say, human existence itself is meaningful, is a form of productivity, has value. While letting the world see, people are of course adjusting and engaging in self-improvement. This is the mutual reference and mutual verification between heaven and humanity.
