This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Eight decades ago, the Chinese people, together with people around the world, withstood the test of fire and blood, and ultimately defeated fascism, achieving the great victory of justice over evil, and light over darkness. After 14 years of indomitable struggle and bloody battles, the Chinese people defeated the ferocious Japanese militarist aggressors and won the great victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
This was the longest, most extensive and most costly struggle for national liberation in modern Chinese history. It was also the first complete victory of the Chinese people in their fight for national liberation. From China to countries around the world, people of vision and integrity pressed forward with courage and sacrifice, uniting closely under the banner of anti-fascism, and, through extraordinary struggles, changed the course of 20th-century history, opening a new chapter in humanity's transition from war to peace and from turmoil to order.
Global war against fascism
The essence of fascism was its extreme ideology against humanity and civilization, and its expansion posed a common threat to all mankind. This unprecedented war in human history spread across Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, involving more than 80 countries and regions and about 2 billion people, with over 100 million military and civilian casualties, among which more than 35 million were Chinese and over 27 million were Soviet Union citizens.
During World War II (WWII), the Chinese people joined with people of all countries to form a mighty torrent of justice, building a world anti-fascist united front. Shoulder to shoulder and hand in hand, they defeated the fascist aggressors of Japan, Germany and Italy. The Chinese people will never forget the valuable assistance and support given by peace-loving and justice-upholding countries, peoples and international organizations for the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
The Soviet Union provided strong material support; the American Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group of the Chinese Air Force, risked their lives to open the "Hump Route"; and a large number of anti-fascist fighters from countries including Korea, Vietnam, Canada, India, New Zealand, Poland, Denmark, as well as Germany, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria and even Japan, directly took part in the War of Resistance.
In this sense, the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was for a community with a shared future for humanity. It illustrates that any actions undermining such a community are doomed to fail. The concept of a community with a shared future for humanity, when applied to relations among countries, means that the stability and development of each country are directly linked and mutually conditional with those of others, forming a state of overall and symbiotic development.
Drawing lessons to address current challenges
War is a mirror that enables people to better appreciate the preciousness of peace: Upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, resolutely safeguarding the fruits of the victory in the global war against fascism and keeping alive the belief in no more war and lasting peace. This is the heartfelt aspiration of a world that has suffered from the scourge of war.
Today, the world is undergoing changes unseen in a century at an accelerated pace. Regional conflicts and turmoil erupt frequently and global challenges are intensifying. The world is still far from tranquil. Humanity must draw lessons and experiences from history. The victory in the world war against fascism was a profound revelation of the concept of a community with a shared future for humanity.
The post-WWII experience of resolving a series of international conflicts once deemed irreconcilable demonstrates that the imbalances and asymmetries in the interdependent relations among countries can be addressed through development, by following the principles of fairness and justice and through policy adjustments.
At present, faced with common threats to the very survival of humanity, only by transcending differences, strengthening solidarity and cooperation, shouldering shared responsibilities and sharing peace, can we find the only viable path forward. By working together to make the pie bigger, countries can not only enhance their respective interests but also achieve win-win cooperation and common development.
