Here are 15 things to do at the beginning of the school year.

Number one, make a rough timetable for your week.

Into this you can add clubs, time block time for hobbies and spending time with friends, as well as just putting in your subjects.

Time blocking on apps like Google Calendar is a really good idea if you have a very busy schedule.

You can also set your classes as reoccurring events so they appear every week at the same time.

When I do put all of my classes into Google Calendar though, I do find it becomes quite cluttered.

If you want to put all of your classes in but you don't want it filling up your entire calendar, there is actually a way to hide just your classes.

So if you create a new calendar, you can put all of your classes in this calendar and then you'll see that there is a checkbox on the side, and you can just turn this on and off depending on whether you want to see it or not.

Number two, I talk about this a lot, but make sure you've got a good solid morning and night routine, and that you're going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every day.

Studies have found this is the best way to prevent tiredness, if you've got that consistency.

And having a routine in place, something easy to follow, which you can do automatically, will hopefully help you to keep on top of healthy habits.

Number three, start using a planner regularly to stay on top of things.

So every time you have a new task to do, just make sure you write it down.

Because if we write things down, we're less likely to forget them.

Number four, make sure you're making time for your favorite things, even if just for a few minutes a day.

So if you really love reading, make sure that you're putting that time aside every day.

Make sure you're making time for hobbies and seeing your friends and looking after yourself.

It'll just mean you don't get burnt out, which you'll thank yourself for in the long term, in a couple of months.

For number five though, start as you mean to go on with work.

So even if there's not that much work now, maybe try and get ahead.

At university, when I was able to stay a week ahead of my readings, I was always much more calm and I never regretted doing like two weeks worth of work in the first week when the workload wasn't so heavy.

If you can manage that in the first week, I would highly recommend it.

It just sets you up so well for the term ahead.

Next, keep decluttered and on top of things, so regularly sort through your desk and files on your computer.

When my desktop is cluttered, my mind just feels so much more cluttered and I find that when I keep on top of this, I do not feel so overwhelmed.

And a reset routine will also help with this, which is going on to my next point, which is to come up with a weekly reset routine that you can use once a week, maybe every Friday or every Sunday to kind of get ready for the week ahead.

And I have created this reset routine principle, which is available for free on my website, Pumpkin Productivity.

This can include things like setting goals for the week ahead, writing down what you want to accomplish for the week, backing up files, deep cleaning your room, just all of the things that will help you feel more put together for the next week.

Next, if you don't understand something, get it sorted now.

Because you're going to have to get it sorted eventually, you're going to have to understand it eventually, and it will be so much easier if you do it now when you kind of still are semi-familiar with the material because in a month's time you're gonna be less familiar with it than you are now.

So if you have a question, please, please, please ask your teachers.

I know it can sometimes feel embarrassing.

I used to feel embarrassed to ask my teachers or like admit that I didn't understand something, but just a reminder to please never ever shy away from asking your teachers or admitting that you don't understand something.

I weirdly used to feel embarrassed if I didn't get something, even though that's the process of learning, we're not supposed to get it straight away.

And I realised that too late.

I wish that I had asked more questions.

Fill out all of your deadlines for the next few months in your calendar, so nothing accidentally creeps up on you and you just have everything at a glance.

Also set up a good study space somewhere that you enjoy to be because if you like your study space you're more likely to want to sit down and study.

I always like to have mine very nice and cosy so candles and nice pens and pictures.

Just make it somewhere you want to be and personally I'd recommend, if you can, having natural daylight too.

Also make a note of some good study spaces which aren't your desk, so places out the house like your favourite cafes or the library or maybe the kitchen table, your favourite study spots at school or on campus so you don't have to think too much about this and you have set spaces which you can go to.

Make a note of some study snacks and maybe go out and get some of these in like a load of protein bars or energy bars so that you have a selection at home, and you can easily reach these because studying when you're hungry is not fun, and I just find that you just tend to get more hungry when you're studying.

You could even write down your favourite snacks so it's easier to choose what you want to have and you don't spend ages like thinking about it.

Make a study playlist with some nice classical music or ambient sound, whatever you enjoy studying to.

I actually have a few playlists which I will leave linked down below if you're interested to try those.

I tend to listen to classical music or film soundtrack.

Set aside time every night to tidy your room and tidy your desk so that everything is ready and clean for the next morning.

Penultimately, sign up for your clubs now, and don't wait to sign up.

This is a rookie mistake which I made at university.

There are so many clubs that you might want to join, so many activities you might want to try, but you think, oh, I'll wait a couple of weeks.

And then you just end up never signing up for them.

So while you're excited about it, at the beginning of the year, sign up for those activities, sign up for those clubs, and start going.

And then finally, decide what note-taking method you want to use for this year.

So will you use flashcards, or mind maps, or digital notes, or notebooks?

Make the decision now and stick to it because it would just help to keep all of your notes in one place and hopefully prevent you from losing anything.

That's not to say you can't use other note-taking methods, but I would just recommend making sure that you transfer any to this main hub which you use.

So for example, if you tend to use a notebook to take notes, but you typed up one week worth of lecture notes, you might just print this out and stick it into your notebook.

Anyway, thank you so much for watching, I hope you found this useful and I wish you the very best for the new academic year.
